About the Author
David Leathers is a musician and filmmaker. After working as a studio touring musician in New York during the '70s and early '80s, he relocated to Los Angeles and was trained in audio recording engineering and video production. For the last 20 years he has been wearing a variety of hats in video and film production, postproduction, and music. He's also worked extensively as a writer and consultant in the field of audio and video technology and computer-based systems. He's reviewed hundreds of products for video and audio magazines, including Videography, EQ, Video Systems, Broadcast Engineering, Digital Cinema, and many others. He started working with Pro Tools systems about nine years ago in the context of sweetening audio for video projects and now uses the system for both music recording and audio post in his Los Angeles studio.

Who Needs More Advertisement?

I quite agree with the other reviewer here; the "Pro Tools Bible" starts out with a short section dedicated to an incomplete understanding of a few superficial basics of the program, then degenerates entirely into a collection of what amounts to advertisement for a pile of commercially available (and, yes, overpriced) plug-ins. I waited a long time for this book- for some reason I had high hopes for it- because of several publishing delays. By the time I got "Pro Tools Bible", although Digidesign's manual (included with the program) is miserably confusing (as included handbooks are prone to be), I had already learned everything in it on my own.

General, incomplete, largely superficial

About a third of the book contains material one might think of as fitting for a "bible", if that's to mean "authoritative". Well, the "real" Bible's authoritative but full of cr-p (unless pre-stoning mass rape is your trip). This book's not full of cr-p, just about 2/3 full. The "authoritative" third covers Pro Tools in about 10% of the detail the manuals will provide. The other 2/3 of the book contains blurby paragraphs about this that and the other plugin - about as informative as a free technicolor catalog from your neighborhood music store. If you want this because you're thinking of maybe getting Pro Tools, and you want a very slight hint of what having and using PT is about then get it, why not: it's nicely written, great pix, looks chunky, doesn't cost a fortune, and maybe most importantly will (if you read between the lines) give you a picture of just how expensive PT really is, since without a slew of mighty expensive plugs you will get nowhere fast. If you want it for learning more about Pro Tools than the manuals offer, forget it.

Ok but far too technical

If you're a complete beginner you may want to find a better book, this one is far too technical & complicated. This book is better suited for the intermediate to advanced user.
