Regulations with some Calculations not a How To Book

Book arrived and although it was in good condition, it did not have the advertised documents on the attached CD. Also, the discussion in the book "how to obtain air quality permits" was more of a regulatory overview. It did not cover enough about applications to do anyone any help applying for a permit. I thought this would be a how to book and it was more of a what the program is than anything else.

A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!

This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.
This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.
This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

Easy reading for beginning Neonatal RNs

This book is very easy to read and very informational. It covers NICU info rom the delivery room to procedures and concepts such as RDS and PDAs. It also has information on managing Central lines and Vents. I highly reccomend it.

I am a first year resident on my first NICU rotation. I had bought the book on the advise of the senior residents and fellows. I really found the book to be concise and at the same time exhaustive. Definitely recommend this book.

100% improvement in my writing

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I'm a communications professional who writes reports and presentations for a living. I was looking for a book that would help me fine-tune my otherwise good writing skills.

This book was more than I hoped for. Not only did it change the way I write reports and presentations, it also changed the way I write email - getting to the point faster, cutting superflous words, writing without editing until later, and other nuggets of wisdom and practical advice.

If you look at my other book reviews, you will see I'm a harsh critic and don't give five stars easily. But my writing is vastly improved because of the lessons in this book and I highly recommend it for anyone serious about improved written communication.

Too wordy, not designed for a basic learner

I'm not a writer. I'm a trainer who needs to design a writing course. I need to give people basic tips to write better. This book might have tips, but they're buried in words. It's not a book about how to write better. It's a book about writing.

Other reviewers love the book, but they sound like professional writers. If that is you, then you'll also like the book as it talks about the process of writing, it's importance, it's history, whatever. I don't need that stuff.

More Than a How-to-Write Text

Business Writing and Communication by Kenneth W. Davis claims to be an "easy-to-learn, step-by-step approach to making yourself a more powerful and persuasive business writer." It achieves that goal and more. It is also a learned book, demonstrating a breadth of knowledge and scholarship unusual in a "how-to" book.

What makes the book extraordinary is the rich collection of business wisdom woven throughout. Business Writing and Communication introduces the reader to the major business gurus of the last 30 years - Naisbitt, Toffler, Peters, Drucker, Deming, Beckwith, Iacocca - and M.A.S.H.'s Larry Gelbart. The quotes gathered just on pages 3-6 make the business case for clear communication persuasively and succinctly - and that's just the beginning. Throughout the book, the reader encounters not only the principles of effective writing, but also the positioning of writing as critical to business success. Davis begins the book by asserting, "In this knowledge economy, writing is the chief value-producing activity." He makes his case.

This book demonstrates what it teaches - that logical organization of ideas delivered in a lively, engaging style satisfies the reader. It is packed with real-world examples - documents that illustrate the points being made and anecdotes about successful and unsuccessful business communication strategies. The book's style itself is breezy, but appropriate; conversational, but clear. A pleasure to read, Business Writing and Communication contributes substantially to our understanding of "business communication" - not just the "how" but also the "why important."

Review for the Sensors Handbook

The sensors handbook is mainly a collection of 75 research articles. The articles describe research on various sensor systems in industry and academia. For example, chapters 11-15 are review papers on MEMS research in a few US universities, and Chapter 27 is about research on a networked smart sensor system. The information in these papers say little about design of sensors and sensor systems, seletion and specs. of sensors, setting up sensors, and advantages/disadvantages of various sensors. In summary, I found that Sensors Handbood did not contain the kind of information I expected to find in such a handbook and therefore it was not very useful.

Excellent beginning-intermediate verb intro

If you don't study Arabic script first, this book is going to be unnecessarily difficult. Otherwise, it is the best introduction to verbs I have found. It is a short book (123 pages + the Appendixes and Verb Index). The chapters are clearly organized and with easily understandable explanations focusing on verb grammar without any distractions.

Key words in lessons are transliterated (using a easily comprehensible system) along with the Arabic text.

The book also has something that I have not found in any other Arabic language instruction books: It has two verb indexes (Arabic-English and English-Arabic) listing 400 common verbs that are used in the lessons. This is something I have been very frustrated in searching for--a list of commonly used verbs to study that I can access through English-Arabic as well as Arabic-English. Additionally, each verb entry in the index has 1) the 3 or 4 letter root, 2) the two principle parts, 3) transliteration of the principle parts, 4) verb type (for example: I, defective), and 5) page in the book that uses the verb.

Since I have spent a lot of time searching and not found any verb index nearly as helpful, the verb index alone is a study tool that seems worth the price of the whole book!

The Color of Cities

As a colorist for the last twenty years, specializing in exterior building color I was sorely disappointed to read this book. Basically everything she had to say of import could have be said in an essay. The author has a wonderful vocabulary but after wading through all the prose one finds there is liitle said that isn't entirely obvious. I was left with the impression that this book was concieved as a great excuse to travel to the world's really wonderful places. You will note that she not traveled to Lubbock or Erzerum.

The is a somewhat remarkable book, worth the high price tag. Swirnoff tackles an unique issue: the role of color/light in forming a particular city's identity. She cites (and sites) examples from New York to Santa Fe to Venice to Mexico to Paris to the Caribbean to Stockholm to Japan and many others, too. The book has many photo examples, both black-and-white and color, as well as quite thought provoking written discussion.This is a much-needed book, focusing on an important issue of local identity at a time when globalization challenges the specifics of space and place. The book would appeal to travellers, visual artists, architects, sociologists, urban planners and many others.

Pictorial Travel Book....Not A Book on Color

For me this book boiled down to a pictorial travel book with multiple small texts describing the cities/countries in a rather general sense. There was nothing analytical about the colors of the cities the author visited and it barely appeared as though a thorough study of the locations' specific colors was even conducted. Nor were the pictures featured in the book of great quality, interesting content, or felt cohesive to a book supposedly about city-specific color. I was hoping that this book would be similar to Dominique and Jean-Philippe Lenclos' Colors of the World but at a smaller scale but it disappointedly was not.

A Suitable Quick Study

If you are a little confused on where to put your money, If Not Stocks What? may be the antitdote to your perplexed mind.
The stock market has gone through many changes over the past few years. Many investors are a little fearful of losing a chunkof their money in a here today gone tommorow tech stock or a deceptive company like Enron.
Gene Walden outlines in simple language the strenghts and weaknesses of many alternate investment vehicles such as convertible bonds, collectibles, tresury bills, and real estate partnerships and trusts. Walden discusses in each chapter the proper timing strategies. In addition, he guides each vehicle to a particular audience. Example: you would not buy into a long term treasury bill during a rising bull market unless you possibly are looking to preserve your income for retirement.
Some good reference information is provided. An extensive list of Real Estate Investment Trusts is provided in the first chapter with the appropriate symbols. Also, a few web sites are provided to educate one's self on bonds and treasuries.
This book is a good general reference as it certainly won't overwhelm its audience. A more savvy investor might want to purchase some with a little more detail instead of or in addition to this book.

Suitable Starter

I re-read this recently and it proves to be just as useful as when published in 2004. It gives clear descriptions of investment options, as well as whether or not to initiate those investments in times of high or low interest and boom/bust economies. Warning: As good as this book is, skip the chapters on mortgage-backed investments and affiliated options. The author, like most of us, was duped into believing in the "stability" of the mortgage investment market. He even sings the praises of Freddie Mac and Sallie Mae's financial sturdiness. Hindsight being what it is, it's forgivable. So don't let that sway you from taking a look at this as a primer for neophyte investors.
