Real Insight

A friend picked this book up in a bookstore and handed it to me. I took one look at it and thought, "no thanks," but I did read a couple of pages of one of the essays and it really drew me in. I bought it and kept reading. I was surprised to find how compelling all the stories were and how different. Matt Brigg's may be my favorite and the editor Ava Chin's is great, too, but all of the pieces had something original in them, something I found very true. My parents are still married, but a lot of my friends come from divorced families and I think this book gave me insight into their lives like never before. The writing is terrific and the stories are sad -- and funny, too. Well worth it.

For Anyone Wha Has Been Through It.

Why wasn't this book written before?
What an insightful, honest and heart-wrenching book. As a child of divorced parents I found that many of the essays echoed the same feelings I felt and still feel. The essays speak from the heart and I reccomend it to any child of divorce. This is not only for Generation Xers but for anyone who has lived through the breakup of their parents.
Thanks to Ms. Chin for bringing such a diverse group together to share their stories.

Resonates years after reading

I read this book several years ago and often find myself thinking about it. My parents divorced when I was thirteen and at the time I saw the divorce as primarily a result of religious differences. However, I found so much in common with these other tales of divorce that I realized a lot of my experience had more to do with the divorce and consequent remarriages than religion. The insights into relating (or not relating much) to new step siblings and parents were especially resonant. Even after years of individual, I walked away from this book with new insights.

William J. Palm III is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Rhode Island. It's not like you have a choice, but....

I have heard that there are only a few books out there for system dynamics, so I want to cut this one some slack. However, what I want in a book is many detailed examples, and this book simply does not have that. It has quite a bit of explaining, but in my opinion, one example is worth 1000 words. The examples it has tended not to be inclusive.

Considering the content, the text is quite readable.

This would be a good supplement if the professor did plenty of practice problems in class. As most (of mine) do not, I really do not know how to do problems.

Another thing that irks me about this book is that it does not have answers, not even selected answers, in the back. Therefore, I have no idea if I am doing the problems correctly.

Not real impressed

This book is about as dry as it gets when it comes to texts. Most likely it will be mandatory for your class but just hope that your teacher has some good example problems for you and can explain them because this texts in limited in its examples and does not help you understand them well enough.
The reason i gave it the two stars I did is the redeeming factor of the material in the book. It is actually very useful. Its just that the authors didn't do the best job of aiding in understanding.

About the Author
Charlie Wing received his Ph.D. in oceanography from MIT, where he later worked as a research scientist. Since then his career has been explaining how things work--teaching physics at Bowdoin College, founding America’s first two do-it-yourself house-building schools (the Shelter Institute and Cornerstone), hosting a PBS series on energy conservation, and writing a dozen top-selling books on home building, home maintenance, and remodeling. Wing lived aboard a cruising sailboat for six years, during which time he wrote the first edition of this book on a solar-powered Macintosh computer. He is the author of four other IM books.

Missleading title

The title says robots you can build, yeah this is true if you are an engineer. The projects are not cheap either, almost all require a basic board, which is about $150 . It does give you a list of the parts and there price, but it doesn't say where to buy them from. All it lists is the name and the address of a company, that I think the author must work for. It is good in that it has an interesting few chapters on AI, robots now and in the future, which are very intriguing. I can only recommend this book to those that have deep pockets and know how to read schematics. If you don't have either, then I suggest you wait for the programable leggo robots to come out this Christmas.

Projects can be a bit pricy.

The illustrations and text I found to be very helpful for a project I was working on, but the supplies the book recommends can usually de difficult to find, and can tend to be a bit pricy.
I recommend visiting a local toy store after deciding on a project, and buying toys with the parts you need. Its more fun to make one thing into another anyway.

Iovine's Robots,Androids and Animatrons:a great introduction

If you are looking for a comprehensive yet easily understood review and guide to robotics, this is a perfect book. After an introduction and history, the author discusses the primary elements of robots: power, drives and sensors. Then he explains one of the central topics in hobby robotics: neural networks. Iovine does an excellent job of contrasting this type of robot with more traditional types, and in doing so can save the novice many hours of research. The remaining chapters are devoted to specific types of robots--everything from battery powered "walkers" and solar-bots, to underwater and blimp-like devices. He also describes robotic arms, how to control robots with computers, and finally, how to construct an android hand! For all of these projects, Iovine provides schematic electrical diagrams and directions for construction.
This is indeed a terrific summary and guide to the fascinating field of hobby robotics.

Great book to study for Naplex..

This is among the best books that I have read so far. I really liked different sections of topics covered for Naplex with format similar to Naplex. Best thing about this book is the CDROM that came with the book and has many questions in real Naplex like format with full explanations, why the answer is right or wrong. I have heard good things from many of my friends who have cleared Naplex and are working as Pharmacists. I would highly recommend this book to everyone serious about Naplex.

This book is great!!!

This book was really, really helpful in preparing me for the NAPLEX because it has plenty of questions to work on. Every question has an explanation in the back that you can look at and the authors even cite where the answer came from. The CD was also very helpful too. The book and the CD arrived in pristine condition about 3 days after I ordered it.

Very impressed

I bought this for my daughter as she is homeschooled. As I read through it I was very impressed with how it is very comprehensive. Although there are no labs to do, I would still recommend this book for a 9th grade biology class.

Too many errors

I purchased the "Biology Demystified" Book to help in my studies. In going through the book I encountered at least seven scientific inaccuracies or self-contradictions. Usually these contradictions occur between the text and the quizzes or tests.
For example, on page 381 question #88 the test asks, "Literally, this Class is for the birds". The correct multiple choice answer should be "A. Aves". Instead, according to the book the correct answer is "C. Agnatha".
The Agnatha is the subphylum of jawless fishes (found on page 196). Obviously, then this is an error in the book.
Because there are so many errors, it makes it difficult to rely solely on the book for information. However, as a supplemental source this book would be fine as long as you are aware of the mistakes.
The inaccuracies I encountered are listed below.
1. Page 136, Question #4: Incomplete sentence.
2. Page 88, Question #3: Inaccurate definition.
The difference between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells is the presence or lack of membrane-bound organelles.
3. Page 125, paragraph 2 & page 135, Question #2: Self-contradiction.
4. Page 135: Inaccurate fact. The main source of infections are still bacterial rather than fungal (I asked a Doctor.).
5. Page 152 & Page 158, Question #9: Self-contradiction.
6. Page 33 & Page 370, Question #26: Self-contradiction and unclear question. Technically both Francesco Reid and Louis Pasteur threw doubt on the former Theory of Spontaneous Generation.
Error number seven I used as an example.
Personally I was disappointed with the book having so many serious errors in it. If they fix the errors, then this book would be really good. But right now, you have to take it with a tablespoon of salt.
I hope this information helps for those who are considering or have already purchased this book.

Learning biology in a few weeks has never been easier

I purchased this book awhile back and I can honestly say that after extensive review I am extremely satisfied with the knowledge I have gained from this book. I am a premedical student and aspiring doctor and I will be working on my BS in biology soon. This book teaches you the basics and solidifies your understand in common everyday language and even illustrates these hard to grasp concepts for easier understanding. Once you have mastered the first few chapters of this book simply by reading them and taking the end of chapter quizzes, you will have a strong understanding of the principles of biology.

As a matter of fact, when I first got this book I knew very little on biology. I read the first 5 chapters of this book (roughly 100 pages or so) and I aced three college level biology exams based only on the knowledge I obtained from Biology Demystified. This is an excellent study guide and it has really helped me to understand the easier concepts so I can relate them to the harder ones. Rule of thumb: Something is only hard if you don't understand it. Biology Demystified will teach you everything you need to know to get started with biology: Case closed!
