About the Author
Nancy Woloch teaches history and American Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. She is the author of 'Muller vs. Oregon: A Brief History with Documents' (1996); co-author of 'The American Century: A History of the United States Since the 1890s' (1998), with Walter Lafeber and Richard Polenberg; and co-author of 'The Enduring Vision: A History of the American People' (4th ed., 2000).

An engaging, well-balanced window on women's history

I have been using this text for several years with adult students of American women's history. They have found it very readable -- thorough, well-balanced, and engaging. Woloch pairs chapters so that the first chapter in each pair gives a close-up view of a person or event, and the following chapter presents the social, cultural and economic context for that close-up view. In this way, we have a chance both to experience "up close and personal" glimpses of history and to gain deeper, more multi-facted historical awareness. Woloch's voice is precise and well-measured, but not without vitality and humor. Her book provides a wonderfully comprehensive and comprehensible overview of the history of women in America.

Hard to see print

I got the Kindle version and it is extremely hard to read. It seems that instead of being a Kindle digital version as advertised, it is really a pdf file. There is no font enlargement available and when I zoom, the page moves all over the screen when I move to the next paragraph. No matter how slowly I move to the next paragraph, I end up somewhere that I don't belong. I even got reading glasses. I am very disappointed with the layout of this book. Had I known that I was getting a pdf file, then I would have bought the hardcover.

A good reference

Read this book for my women's history class. I found it to be alot like Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States - good material you can't find anywhere else, but quite skewed to one perspective.
