Totally updated for 2002, this is a tax guide that focuses on how to pay less taxes, rather than focusing on how to fill out the forms and figure out what you owe. Unlike most of the brand-name tax guides, its primary perspective is tax saving not tax preparation. Organized all around the IRS sanctioned deductions, shelters, credits, and exemptions, this book is easy to read, easy to apply, and it zeroes in on what people really care about - paying less to the IRS! Includes comprehensive coverage of more deductions than any tax book, including those related to: child care and elderly care, moving expenses, job hunting expenses, mortgages and points, investment expenses, and 401(k)s. The book is organized into six sections, including: exclusions, credits, general deductions, "below the line" deductions, traditional tax shelters, and super tax shelters.

EYEOPENING!! Packed with tax-saving wisdom
By Manny Hernandez
This is the second year in my life I file my taxes (it's the second year I've worked in the US), so until I read this book (actually I skimmed through it, to be honest...) I wasn't too familiarized with the many ways in which you can save money on taxes. And only skimming through it I could make a list of at least twenty items I didn't know I could deduct from my taxes.
The book is written for the nineteenth year in a row by the same author who runs a column about the topic on MoneyCentral.com, so you might know him from there, but that's not all, really. It walks you through all sorts of scenarios, from the typical individual to the business owner, so that you can profit from all possible deductions that apply to your case. In fact I realized that I could be saving a ton more money as a business-owner!!
Finally, he covers some stories about the IRS (some horror ones, in general) but also wisely goes into detail as to why things are the way they are inside the Internal Revenue Service. Even scarier than the possibility of an audit, seemed the level of prehistoric technology they are using to process tax filings... Anyway, the central point is: for the moneyit'll cost you it's worth every penny, and will pay for itself hundreds of times. Buy it!

Didn't answer the questions I had
By Christopher Fortner
I read this book at Borders Bookstore. While the book is helpful for those who fill out forms and want a general understanding of the new tax codes, it like many books of its type don't deal with the constitutional principles of taxation. Otto Skinner who wrote The Best Kept Secret is the only one I've seen who does this. So, this book is good to a certain extent, but the reader is no where closer to getting beyond the confusion about direct and indirect taxes.
