Melissa Ohlson, M.S., R.D., is the nutrition projects coordinator, preventive cardiology and rehabilitation at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Early stage diabetes can be managed easily with a disciplined
approach consisting of diet control and daily exercise. The
authors point out that an increase in blood glucose damages
nerves. In addition, the BMI or Body Mass Index is a good
indicator of the optimal weight loss objective to achieve for
dieters. The plasma/glucose ratio should be well under 126 after
8 hours of fasting.
The book identifies optimal foods for dieters and persons
desiring to control sugar. These foods are as follows:
- low glycemic index foods are all bran, lentils, nuts, soy,
yogurt, most fruits and veggies, beans, brown rice, pita bread
- red grapes, celery, green tea, berries, bulk, soy and flaxseed
- Omega 3 fats reduce inflammation
- Vitamin Biotin,Ca., Mg., B1 , 3, 6, 12,Folate,A,C,E, Se.

Good information for the diabetic.

I was diagnosed diabetic 5 years ago and control this disease thru diet and exercise and am constantly on the lookout for information and recipes. I particularly like the manner in which the nutritional analysis shows both the analysis for the "serving" but also how much of that constitutes a "fruit and vegetable" serving. The book is too new to me to have tested very many of the recipes but those I have are delicious. The information about diabetes is also very good. Wish I had discovered this book 5 years ago. Thanks.

Not for Me

I did not buy this book but made the mistake of paying for recipes on line. I would rather go without than eat such nasty tasting food. The desert recipes all have stevia extract in them which leaves a nasty after taste. Tried one bread recipe and it was almost inedible. All the recipes are extremely high calorie and high fat. All of them have some type of coconut oil or coconut milk in them. If your into that diet there are much better things to eat. The deserts definitely don't help with any sugar cravings. Also keep in mind that the bread and desert recipes all call for very expensive organic ingredients. Diabetes can be managed without subjecting yourself to this food and the average diabetic probably can't afford it anyway. I will continue on a diet of whole foods - foods with only one ingredient and avoid high Glycemic Index foods.
