Schaum in name, not in content

The principal value of Schaum's Outline Series is, in my opinion, its large collection of solved problems. I used Schaum's for supplementary material back in college days, and I use it now in teaching. So imagine, if you will, Scahum's Outline of Intermediate Algebra shrunk in size from 8x11 to 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches, and trimmed in length from 379 pages to 120. That's what this book is. Almost all the solved problems are gone. For people who want a summary of intermediate algebra topics with a few sample problems along the way, less wordy than the average textbook, maybe this is a good buy. But it's not your classic Schaum's, with all those solved problems for practice.
Be warned that the online marketing material is easy to misread, especially since the cover thumbnails are exactly the same size. They gave the impression that this is a newer edition of the old standard. It's not. Buyer beware. The original is available for a few dollars more, and that's the one I recommend.

Engineering major

I was out of high school for a few years, before attending college. I knew I had forgetten all of the math, so I purchased a series of Schaum Outline's to refresh my memory. My goal was to do good enough on the entrance exam, to have me placed near Calculus - where I needed to be for Engineering courses. Let's just say, that this was a COMPLETE waste of time.
I have at least four Schaum Outline books, and all four did NOTHING for me. It's not like I'm bad at math. I went on to do pretty well in my higher level college math courses, and math became my strength. These books just aren't very clear.
If you are buying these books to study or to self teach yourself, you're wasting your time.
If this is to study, you need to see a tutor at your high school/college and get assistance. Most likely, you just need to do the homework assignments in the textbook more often - AT LEAST 1 hour a day, each assignment, until the exam. There are some FREE online resources that helped me during college too.
If this is to "teach" yourself, you really should consider buying a textbook from a college campus, or any online website. These just won't do you any good.

A great algebra review for those who have already mastered the subject

I have used this book for years as a periodic refresher of the basic principles of algebra. This little gem of a book reviews the essentials of algebra exceptionally well, and it does so in a clear and concise manner.
If you are going on to calculus-based coursework, you will need to suplement this text with a precalculus book in order to learn the more advanced algebraic tricks of the calculus trade. If you are not going on to calculus, this text is probably more than sufficient to review all of the important concepts of algebraic manipulation you will encounter in algegra-based science and technical coursework.
Some of the other Schaum's books have been a real disappointment to me, containing serious errors in defining crucial concepts and presenting essential formulas. These errors are a source of great frustration, tripping up and misleading the student who is trying to learn from the text. An example of this would be their general chemistry text in this series.
These errors could be avoided and the books become gems just like this one would the publishers/authors take the time to carefully proofread the proof copies prior to printing. I wish all publishers would learn this valuable lesson, for although time is money, errors in a mathematical, scientific or technical textbook undermine the text's credibility and are a source of great frustration for the readers. The readers then post negative reviews and sales plummet correspondingly. A book of this nature literally sinks or swims based upon its academic merit, as well as the author's ability to communicate the essential information clearly and concisely.
