Great resource for Plumbers.

The author, whom has written a number of other titles on this same subject, has a wealth of knowledge about all facets of Plumbing. What is also notable as well as commendable is when reading his books, you get the feeling that he really likes this field. If Plumbing is your business, then it would be to your advantage to have this as well as some of Woodson's other titles in your collection. This book doesn't pretend to be any more than a vast, comprehensive reference tool--and in my opinion, succeeds. This is the book that you have in your truck if you are a plumber or on the shelf beside your desk if you are a designer. My only criticism (a minor one) is the lack of explanation of pumps and their sizing. Some charts and diagrams are offered but no explanation is given as a follow through. Overall though, I recommend the text as great reference resource every plumber should have.

A lot of charts and such, but not very well written for the novice or everyday handyman. Didn't go into enough detail on repairs or installation processes. Might be a good book for a journeyman plumber. Not a good how-to book.

A useful book which makes a false claim about itself on the cover

I am a professional English teacher, and have used this book with two of my students who are preparing for the TOEFL. The level of the book is kind of upper-intermediate, and the 400 words are quite useful, and your students will encounter many of them again later when they take the real TOEFL. The headwords are explained well and become even more understandable after reading the example sentences. Also, different parts of speech are given.
Sometimes it seems to me that some of the example sentences which are used to illustrate the words' use require either having lived in the US for some time ("As usual, their holidays were ruined when their in-laws' views on politics collided with their own."- In my experience not many foreign students know about the US tradition of arguing about politics during Thanksgiving and Christmas), or heavy use of a dictionary ("Before injecting a painkiller, the dentist rubbed CLOVES on a woman's GUMS to NUMB them."- I don't think things should be dumbed down, but these kinds of sentences limit the usefulness of the book for self-study), or simply a teacher to stand there and explain to you the context behind such sentences. Another nice thing is that the units are short- in self study, you could go through a unit in 35 minutes and learn 10 new words with good example sentences.
To sum up, it is a good introduction to the kind of words you will see on the TOEFL if your level is not quite enough to independently sit down and start with practice tests, but is no substitute for the practice tests themselves. If your level is high enough, you may want to just take the bull by the horns.
I hate to close with a complaint, but the cover of the book proclaims that there is a complete review of roots, prefixes, suffixes and more, and there is no such thing in this book. For that reason I subtract one star, and give this book a three.

Basics of analog & digital PLLs, orthogonal to Wolaver.

This book is certainly worth owning. It is 1 of 7 PLL books that I own. I use it as a reference for the basic PLL linearized transfer functions even after I found that the transfer function for the 2nd order PLL with ideal integrator is incorrect.

Best covers analog PLLs with each block replaced by a digital implementation based on the incremental improvements made in standard TTL implementations of PLLs offered over the decades. This allows the reader to fully understand each digital block and the PLL in a way that is excellent for an introductory text.

The digital PLL is a numerical implementation of each PLL function, which has by definition an analog function. One way to implement such a numerical PLL is via replacing each analog function with the equivalent numerical function, without much focus on the Z domain and digital signal processing (DSP) concepts. That is what this book does. Look elsewhere for a book with heavy use of Z domain math (consider the Kluwer Acedemic Press Book 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Analog and Digital' by Stephen (?) for more DSP math.

Best's approach is viable. I have personally designed a leading edge all-digital PLL, adding patent pending analog enhancements, and can asure the reader that straight-forward DSP approaches do not lead to the optimal designs, at least at the high data rates. Understanding of the PLL in analog form, and then adding the digital analogues is an excellent way to go. Best's book is surprisingly very different from Wolaver's book, almost orthogonal; start with Wolaver, then add Best if adding digital gates step by step to an analog PLL is of interest to you (it was to me).

Good Book for Intro to PLL (PCB Level)

This book provides explanations of PLL behavior with an easy to understand methodology that includes analogies of PLLs to mechanical systems. He covers analog, digital, all digital, and software PLLs. He has a good explaination of all digital PLLs and is one of the few books that has a practical chapter on making measurements on a PLL. A computer simulation program is provided that helps readers look at PLL performance. The only issue with this book is that it does not cover transistor level components so that IC engineers can design a PLL.

A good book to learn the theorie of PLL

I think this book give designers a good understanding of the fundamental theorie of PLLs. It gives you step by step the necessarly mathematical background to understand how a PLL is working. The examples are mostly for analog PLLs, but the mathematical theories are the same for all kind of implementations.
I really like the chapter where the different PLL-Parameters are defined: It clearly explains and defines the different working modes like "hold", "lock" or "pull-in".
The book is not for people who are looking for prepared applications. Even when the subtitle of the book suggests this.

A Great Book For Insomniacs--It Will Put You to Sleep

This book starts out discussing how powerful Six Sigma is and ways companies have used to realize huge cost savings. Unfortunately, it doesn't ever get rolling. Midway through it gets tedious and boring waiting for the author to get to some point where something in the way of techniques is actually discussed.

Better choice is Six Sigma Statistics Made Easy. It gets going from the start and actually teaches techniques. The essential statistical tools are not at all difficult.

As for Six Sigma: The Mcgraw-Hill 36 Hour Course, spend your money on any other book about Six Sigma techniques and processes.

SO MANY TYPOS!!!

There are so many typo's and misprints in this book some topics are hard to get through. Some of the review questions don't have answers in the back, some are in the wrong order, and Chapter 7 Answers were skipped all together.

I would NOT recommend this book to anyone!

Comprehensive overview of the fabless S/C industry

In this well written book the author, Rakesh Kumar, shares his 35 years of experience in the semiconductor industry. The book presents a comprehensive overview of the fabless semiconductor technology in an easy to read fashion. The book includes an overall picture of the dynamics of the semiconductor industry as well as a detailed, step-by-step discussion of what is involved in launching a new product as a fabless company. It takes the reader through the lifecycle of a fabless company and points out the challenges and pitfalls of developing a new IC. The book covers the various implementation options and technology choices. It emphasizes the importance of dealing with customers and suppliers and sharing a long term roadmap with them. There is also extensive coverage of unit and development cost, quality and other operational issues.
Although the book focuses on starting a successful fabless company, many of the issues discussed apply to IDMs and fab-lite companies as well. The book also includes illuminating testimonials of leaders in the semiconductor industry to illustrate the points the author makes in the book.

I have been using this book in a class I am teaching at the University of Pennsylvania on the "Dynamics of the Semiconductor Industry". The course is part of our Executive Masters of Technology Management program which offers an MSE in Engineering, and is co-sponsored by our Wharton Business School. The comprehensive nature of this book makes it an ideal reading for the class, and provides a context against which to teach. It brings together business and technology considerations in a well explained fashion. The book is a must-read for semiconductor design engineers, non-engineering personnel associated with the industry as well as aspiring entrepreneurs.

NOT "real men have fabs"

Kumar explains much about the problems of starting up and running a fabless company. He addresses a reader who might or should already have an idea about a niche in chip or system design currently unaddressed by the marketplace. He explains the ecosystem of the semiconductor industry, and where fabless companies fit in. By now [2008], there are several fabs throughout the world that can take your design tapeouts and instantiate them in silicon.

The text goes through ways to attract funding. Starting with the proverbial friends and family. Then angel investors. Followed by Series A, B etc. All the way to an IPO or perhaps being bought out by a larger, established chip firm. For an American startup, another source of funding is the US government. Through its Small Business Innovative Research grants. Or by contracts with various other federal agencies or departments. Kumar does warn of one danger. You might get success in attracting contracts. But you need to later avoid a sole dependence on these. Otherwise you will never get big; always remaining essentially a research arm of the government.

Comprehensive silicon primer

Dr. Kumar's "Fabless Semiconductor Implementation" is a well written, up to date reference guide for modern custom silicon. The layout is excellent, and the book reads & flows well. Also, I couldn't find a single area that Dr. Kumar fails to address. The book is applicable for a wide range of people from the "smart but inexperienced in silicon" engineer, to the silicon expert seeking a comprehensive reference manual. Lastly, I believe this book is perfect for executives who have silicon groups under them, but have not grown up through the silicon ranks. Highly recommended fabless silicon primer.

An excellent adjunct to longer and more detailed physiology books

I read this book many years ago and really liked the clarity of the presentation, which goes into useful detail while still emphasizing the basics of human physiology. It's a shame that the book appears to be out of print, with no second edition released and used copies currently selling for exorbitant prices. For readers interested in learning or reviewing physiology at a level a bit beyond premed but below med school, I recommend this book if you can find a copy at a reasonable price.

R. Dodge Woodson has owned and operated construction companies and has over 27 years of experience as a contractor. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member for the Central Maine Technical College, where he taught code and apprenticeship classes. Mr. Woodson is the author of more than 80 books on the construction trades, including the National Plumbing Code Handbook and the 2003 International Plumbing Code Handbook, all published by McGraw-Hill.

Not an explanatory guide

I bought this book thinking it was going to offer real-life interpretation of the building code (i.e. a companion like the title says). Instead, this book read like like the building code itself just in different verbiage. I ended up returning it.
