"The Almanac of Online Trading" by Terry Wooten is the first of it's type in this rapidly growing segment of the securities brokerage industry. As more investors use the Internet to trade, this book will become more valuable.
Do not be mislead that the straight-forward approach lacks the necessary information traders are seeking. Mr. Wooten provides all the necessary steps from opening an account and how to get started, to a complete reference of symbols of traded securities, the names and addresses of state regulators, a listing of online brokers, and a glossary of terms that is indispensible for those new to online trading. There are tables that cover commodities trading and trading on foreign exchanges that are valuable for even the most experienced online investor.
This book is not intended to be an investment advisor, whereby if you will profit from following suggested investment strategies. Rather, it is a toolkit for selecting a broker, setting up an account, and executing trades. Extremely useful, but not boring

Remember those stock market books you started to read, then put down before you gave it to Uncle Charlie. This is not that kind of book. If you're new to on-line trading, this provides some concise and essential information. If you're thinking of switching from a regular broker to on-line trading there is help. Almanac does the essentials well and then some. Much as you might turn to another kind of almanac for the phase of moon in six weeks, you turn to this for needed trading information and it's likely to be there and easy to find. The author doesn't have a miracle program to make you rich in two days. But if you pay attention to the common sense advice, you might avoid overnight poverty. And, you'll have a much better chance of achieving your financial goals.

This book is a rip off.

There is no substancial information about trading other than symbols for a large number of companies, this takes 1/3 of the book the other 2/3 talk about how carefull you should be but doesn't give you specifics. The information about the industry is very inaccurate. If you have access to the internet there is nothing in this book you can't get on one of the many internet portal out there and you get accurate information. If you are new to trading this book doesn't help and if you are allready trading you'll find it very useless.

About the Author
Larry W. Mays is professor of civil and environmental engineering at Arizona State University and former chair of the department. He was formerly director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also held an Engineering Foundation Endowed Professorship. A registered professional engineer in seven states and a registered professional hydrologist, he has served as consultant to many organizations. A widely published expert on water resources, he wrote Optimal Control of Hydrosystems (Marcel Dekker) and was editor in chief of both Water Resources Handbook (McGraw-Hill) and Hydraulic Design Handbook (McGraw-Hill). Co-author of both Applied Hydrology and Hydrosystems Engineering and Management published by McGraw-Hill, and was the editor in chief of Reliability Analysis of Water Distribution Systems (ASCE), and co-editor of Computer Modeling of Free-Surface and Pressurized Flows (Kluwer Academic Publishers). He has published extensively on his research in water resources management.

This book is a great one-stop reference for engineers and designers involved in water distribution or piping networks. The topics are covered in sufficient detail, and if more information is needed, the relevant source is usually listed (e.g. AWWA publication # xxx) so the in-depth source can be found quickly.

He lives in Round Rock, Texas.

Not for new construction

I'm building a new house (sweat equity) and bought this book for "how-to" advice on my home plumbing. This is the wrong book! The word "PEX" isn't even mentioned. Things like toilet clearances aren't covered.

There's a lot of repair advice .... so for that purpose the book might be OK.

I realize that building codes vary from one place to another but something more attuned to standard national methods would have been much more helpful.

The Best Undergraduate Textbook I've Seen for Genetics

I've just completed my first semester teaching Genetics at a small liberal arts college in Indiana. Because I was jumping into the position I was stuck using the text previously designed for the class. Almost a third of the book was classical genetics, which I enjoy, but was certainly overplayed. Molecular Biology areas were a jumble of terms to learn and lists to inscribe into their brains. The problems in the book did not reflect the material in the text, leaving the class pretty much upset with the book. By midterm it was time to find another sources for the class.
I found myself reaching for other texts, and "Genetics, Analysis and Principles" turned out to be the jewel. It is well balanced, very clearly written, and does not spend its time making students read long memory lists of genes or proteins that the class is going to forget less than two weeks after the term. I think this is largely reflected by the way he wrote the book; with input from students.
Reading the intro I was afraid that this text was going to be way over into the experimental design/ data side which I've seen in other texts mean "no content". Not so this text; experimental design has been written into the book to describe genetics and content, not replace it. I think what is truely unique about this book is the use of scientific process as a way to teach concepts. I wish I had more books like this one for other courses. I hope Dr. Brooker's format for Biology (and yes other science courses) is adopted for other courses.
If you are considering a text for your Genetics classes, I think you will be very pleased with this book.

Excellent text for self-directed learning

I used this textbook in a distance learning course and have found it to be invaluable to my learnng experience.
For anyone who has taken Genetics, you'll account for the fact that it is not an easy course. Taking it without a professor present is even more challenging. Luckily this text is well written and easy to follow. The author uses a mix of theory and experiment examples to drive important concepts home. The language is not dry like in many Biology texts. Instead, it is easy to read, almost to the point of being enjoyable.
There are a few things I really liked:
1. The illustrations in this book are paramount to learning difficult concepts. When explaining experimental procedures, the text is accompanied by step-by-step instuctions and illustrations as to how the experiment was carried out. This proved helpful in visualizing the procedure.
2. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. The author speaks in easy to understand terms (that is if you have had previous Biology courses.) His writing style is dynamic and never boring.
3. Difficult concepts are often explained more than once. Sometimes the book gets a little ahead of itself, but page numbers and chapters are always given so you can read about things you don't understand.
4. The end of each chapter provides the reader with provocative critical thinking questions that solidify important points from the chapter. Best of all, even numbered answers are given in the back so you can check yourself without hunting through the book.
Overall I'd give this book an A and it will remain in my collection of Biology texts.

Sudent Friendly; Sometimes Wordy but Easy to Understand

This book explains genetics concepts in a clear manner. It is was described to me as both teacher friendly and student friendly. I can easily see how it could indeed be both, though I can only comment on it from a teacher p.o.v. It is the book I've chosen to prepare my class from, and I would highly recommend it for any Genetics class.
