Well-written computer books are rare, but Stephen Ervin and Hope Hasbrouck of the Harvard Graduate School of Design have authored a readable book, profusely illustrated with color images from all over the world, for landscape architects interested in landscape modeling issues. This is not just a book for the "digital gear head" or the "CAD corner" of the office; there is enough conceptual development and landscape modeling theory to pique the interest of even the most technophobic landscape architect. Organized around the timeless components of landscape--landform, vegetation, water, and atmosphere--this book will be useful to landscape modelers long after the last software package mentioned is retired to the scrap heap of computing history.

Significantly, the book is also the organizing concept of the Fourth International Conference on New Trends in Landscape Architecture at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Bernburg, Germany, May 15 and 16, 2003. Ervin will be the keynote speaker.

The book's six chapters start with a broad introduction to landscape modeling and conclude with a synthesis chapter that brings all the threads of the book together. A list of references follows each chapter.

The book includes a companion CD that is really the entire book in digital format. The color images on the web site and CD and especially vivid on a good computer monitor. The CD is copy protected, but the authors should be applauded for risking theft of the images to give the reader a platform-neutral version of the book's images, which look much better on computer monitors than they do on the five-by-eight-inch book page. The web site is even better because a large page of the text of the book is available for easy retrieval at www.landscapemodeling.org.

The first 36 pages of the book are especially useful in introducing technical terms while discussing the operations and calculations of landscape modeling. The authors' examples come primarily from digital images produced by practicing landscape architects and academics. If the book is to be faulted, it would be for its lack of focus on the high end of landscape modeling, such as the work of Pixar Studios (seen in the movies Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.) or DreamWorks (seen in Shrek). This Hollywood level of digital simulation might inspire a new generation of landscape architects to digitally model the natural world.

The second chapter, on landform, introduces the tutorial that is carried out throughout the rest of the book. The simple tutorials engage the reader in a way that leads to possible longer-term understanding of the concepts, although less digitally inclined landscape architects may not be able to make the conceptual leap to select the appropriate software to complete the tutorial. However, these tutorials make the book a perfect tool for an office contemplating an increased use of design computing for projects.

The book contains no reference to computer hardware. The rapid pace of change within the computer hardware market makes this a wise decision.

At the end of the book there are a technical appendix, a glossary of technical terms, and a listing of 27 software packages. The software listing is somewhat limited, because no matter how generic the authors of any computer book attempt to be, they are challenged by the speed at which design software is evolving. One example: Because the book was substantially written in 2000, there is no mention of new software packages such as Sketch-up, the innovative design-oriented rapid modeling package for designers.

Overall, however, this is an attractive and useful book. With its publication, landscape architects no longer have any reason to avoid landform modeling. (Landscape Architecture 2003-02-01)

LANDSCAPE MODELING: Digital Techniques for Landscape Visualization by Stephen Ervin and Hope Hasbrouck

This book is about modeling the landscape, and so it has both an action-oriented purpose--modeling--and an object-oriented one--landscape. Modeling simply means making representations, such as drawings, paintings, and cardboard mock-ups; or, more specifically, using digital computers and computer software to organize information in the form of numbers or bits, then creating images on a computer screen or printed on paper; or creating a series of images to form an animation; or even producing a three-dimensional artifact, such as a physical model created by a numerically controlled machine. Modeling by computer is similar in some ways to drawing or painting with pencil or brush, but is quite radically different in other ways--the differences are mostly what this book is about. Landscape means the natural world, in which we live, garden, work, and build, including both natural systems such as plants and weather, and also built systems, such as roads and cities. Though we may sometimes speak of "the landscape," that is misleading, as there are many different landscapes in this world, and many different perceptions of them. In this text, "the landscape" is used in the same spirit as when we speak of "the human race," meaning to focus on the commonalities and shared attributes, but without ignoring or demeaning the variety and individuality to be found within it.

Four essential elements of the landscape--landform, plants, water, and the atmosphere--are the focus of this book. The first three are the traditional palette of landscape architects, and are the essential components of the natural world, without people or buildings. Of course, in the real world that we live in, the landscape includes structures of all kinds, including buildings and bridges and cars, and a wide variety of animals who activities are vital to the function and look of the landscape. There is a vast literature on using computers to model buildings and structures, using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and while this book assumes some familiarity with those ideas, it does not focus on making models of buildings. Landscape elements are different enough from most buildings and machines--rarely square or flat or simple or small, often curved and fuzzy and complex and large--that while many of the same basic digital tools are used in modeling the landscape, their application requires different techniques, and often a different frame of mind, as well. Landscapes usually combine the four major elements in a myriad of ways, both in nature and when designed and built by humans in many forms including gardens, parks, building sites and urban plazas. This book is motivated by a desire to share techniques for using CAD modeling and rendering tools, combining them with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and tapping the power of computing to help landscape planners, designers and modelers expand their representational repertoire, as well as start to grapple with the complexity and dynamics inherent in the landscape...

Landscape architects and other environmental designers make models of landscapes for the same reasons models are made in all design disciplines: it is easier, faster, often safer, and more responsible, to experiment and try out alternatives with "stand-in" representations, rather than with the "real thing." A landscape architect comparing alternative planting plans--one-, two-, or three-abreast rows of shade trees, for example--can simply look to the real world for some examples of each, and so[me] good designers do keep libraries of examples and references garnered from their own and others' experiences and observations. To actually try out several different schemes, in situ, though, is complicated almost to the point of impossibility. Comparing growth patterns over time, or visual effects in different daylight conditions, could take literally years. Sketches, models, computer renderings, and other representations, however, can be made relatively quickly, and with infinite subtle variations. How good these representations are in helping designers choose between alternatives becomes a question of the detailed characteristics of the representation used--the media, the techniques, the levels of abstraction and realism, and so on. Good book but a bit dated

Ive only had has this book a short time but I like it. There are lots of color images and text book like explanations.

However, the examples are somewhat dated as the book was published in 2001. Most of the sample images are showing some low poly objects, or discussing ways of representing trees which are frankly out of date. No mention that I saw so far of Vue D'esprit, which is far superior to some of the software discussed, such as VistaPro.

The authors need to update it with newer images and discuss some of the newer software, a lot of changes in 3d rendering have emerged in the last 4 years.

I doubt somebody who has been using WCS, Vue, Terragen, Maya, or any advanced 3D landscape artist would find a whole lot of use for this book, but it would be good to give an overview and explain some terminology for a beginner.

Great book for novice presenters

It did not provide me with tips on how to present ideas or how to convey messages.

It is a basic book for how to prepare and how to make a presentation.

I would suggest other books that will show how to present the information: Valuation by Mckinsey and Co. and The right desition every time by Wharton.

Great nuggets (but now a bit dated)

When this book was written in 2006, it was groundbreaking and deserved 5 stars. In 2013, it is in need of a refresh and I hope the author undertakes an update - if he does, I will be first in line to buy it.

Here are my comments by the book's major sections:

1. Introduction:
- Outstanding statement of an audience Bill of Rights that pretty much sums up the philosophy of authentic presenting

2. Define the situation:
- Be able to state the (persuasive) objective of your presentation in one sentence
- Think about how your audience prefers to absorb information (story, pictures, charts, etc.)
- When this book was written, PowerPoint animation was new and transparencies were just disappearing. These days, most presentation experts advise against animation except in very, very rare circumstances.

3. Design the presentation:
- The chapter "Craft the Story Line" is what earns this book 4 stars. It has a crystal clear distillation with an excellent example of Barbara Minto's Pyramid Principle. The gist is (a) lead with recommendation (b) preview your conclusions (c) present each conclusion supported by evidence (d) repeat your recommendation and get buy-in.
- Zelazny's PIP introduction is also valuable (Purpose + Importance + Preview)
- There is a very large section in the middle of the book that reviews design principles in vogue circa 2006. While novel at the time, these principles (clipart, decorative graphs, background images) are now considered cliche'.

4. Deliver the presentation
- The author focuses on psychology (project confidence, conviction, and enthusiasm & don't fear imperfection) and on logistics in this section. The psychology concepts are still spot on today. The logistics advice is mostly dated. I would have liked to have seen more ideas on verbal and non-verbal delivery --- hopefully he will cover if he does an update.

Fundamentals Most Ignore A Bit Too Generic

I was lent this book by a colleague. Here is some context for my appreciation of the book:

01 The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (C/JCS) once BANNED all powerpoint presentations, for two reasons. First, because they had become "death by powerpoint" monstrocities in which intellectually limited people tried to substitute technology for thinking and color for precision of thought; and second, because more often than not, something would go wrong with the computer and the briefing officer would be found to be empty-headed. Too often (and I include myself) powerpoint presentations have been an aid for the BRIEFER, rather than a visual map for the DECISION-MAKER.

02 Presentations as most understand them are didactic tools (I talk you listen) instead of socractic tools (I spark, you engage, we create new understanding). Yes, one good visual can equal 10,000 words, but every visual past one radically loses value in a downward spiral. Less is more.

Presentations are not charts -- they are different, a point the author addresses by publishing a separate book, The Say It With Charts Complete Toolkit, Cd-Rom.

Presentations are also not visualizations, an area where Edward Tufts is a leading light, a mind whose two books below I highly recommend:

Presentations are a tool for thinking and a tool for inspiring human engagement, on this point I have been guided by Howard Rheingold and his books and web blogging, see for instance, Tools for Thought: The History and Future of Mind-Expanding Technology from the 1980's and the more recent Mind Amplifier: Can Our Digital Tools Make Us Smarter? (Kindle Single).

Put as simply as I can, a presentation is a tool for thinking -- one third of the value is in the thinking and doodling and exploration of alternative paths leading to the presentation; one third of the value is in the final product that can inspire others on its own and as a tool, and the last third of the value, almost never achieved, is in the reaction, engagement, inspiration, and collective intelligence that the presentation might elicit.

Presentations that are placeholders and crutches, presentations that are not memorable (for a superb example of memorable see Napoleon's March to Mowcow - the War of 1812, image loaded above with book cover), and presentations that can not be carried away in digital or printed form are generally more fluff than substance.

Now here are some of the fundamentals this book, now it its second edition, covers.

01 WHO is the target audience?

02 WHY are they being briefed?

03 WHAT is the end-state you are seeking once the briefing is over?

04 HOW MUCH TIME do you have? Cut that in half. Your job is to inform, influence, and INSPIRE. Leave time for your slides, if properly done, to elicit engagement.

05 WHERE is the substance? The image is a key to substance that is generally not present -- it is in documents, in human minds, in other forms. Think of your briefing as a portal.

07 DO NOT CONFUSE words on the screen with words of explanation. There is no greater crime in the world of presentations than to read the words, with the possible exception of having images that are irrelevant. "Cute" does not cut it.

The author open the book with an Audience Bill of Rights that I find helpful. 24 rights in each of the following seven categories -- these are the RIGHTS (e.g. the EXPECTATIONS) of the audience, among which I single out two: the right to have time to think and not be asked to commit on the spot; and the right to be SEEN and HEARD by the lowest ranking person in the room furthest from the presentation.

If the purpose of the presentation can be satisfied in another way -- a single email, a one-page summary, a ten-minute conference call or video-teleconference -- consider the alternatives. Wikis have not been well established, especially in large bureacracies, but I anticipate the day when a weekly briefing will instead be a weekly wiki, with various elements contributing visualizations, text, links to references, crafting an outline of what needs to be considered that week, and then filling it in from multiple perspectives.

Briefing is DIDACTIC (I talk you listen). Wiki is SOCRATIC -- visual spark, collective engagement.

I fully expect the author of this book to publish a book on Wiki Communications. As I once wrote for General Al Gray, then Commandant of the Marine Corps, "Communications without intelligence is noise; intelligence without communications is irrelevant." Living wikis are the next step up, in part because they end the obligation of humans to show up at a given time and place to serve technology, instead of technology serving all of them.

HAND-OUTS -- or TINYURLS make a difference. Most organizations are trying to reduce paper use, so I will focus on the alternative of a TINYURL, something I use a great deal but sadly, something the US Army cannot handle. The Army Cyber-Command treats any TINYURL as a hostile virus and deletes the communication. For the rest of the world, a persistent TINYURL, e.g. (URL stuff for tinyurl/Pogo6) is memorable. See for example my persistent tiny url /OSA2011 or IADB-Open.

An alternative is a shared file system, something that the Pentagon bureaucracy does understand but does not manage well. A typical organization should have no more than seven top-level shared files (e.g. J-1 through J-7) and below that, no more than seven levels, and so on. Clutter on the first page of shared files means that digital stuff will be lost and most will not bother looking for it.

The author loses me in the middle portion of the book, which has too much test and too many generic images that are irrelevant to serious business needs.

The section on text visuals is helpful, if one understands that the presentation is a visual aid for the audience, not for the briefer. I translate all this into two rules:

3-5 words per line maximum

The author makes an important point that some might overlook,i.e. that presentations should not be created as solitary endeavors, but rather as team brain-storming. Most managers will have a pre-briefing review to assure the narrative and the quality of the planned briefing. What if there were a pre-briefing conceptual meeting instead, treating using the planned briefing items to do an internal "week in review" and discuss what really matters, changing emphasis as needed?

The author has a graphic on page 113 that I like, consisting of the following:

CIRCLE: Know yourself
Big Arrow: Know your material
CIRCLE: Know your audience
Big Arrow: Know your objective

This translates into a successful presentation. Reflecting on that, I am given pause by the realization that many audiences (e.g. those that accompany a commander to a meeting) are not really well known to the briefers -- they have all been operating in little stovepipes, and the meeting that briefs the commander may be one of the few times when they come together as a group. WHAT IF each briefer had reviewed their briefing with the J-3 and J-5 and J-7 beforehand, gotten a red cell check, and then modified the slide(s) so that the commander is receiving an appraisal that has been pre-validated (without drinking the kool-aid of the other staffs)? There is no substitute for human engagement in the preparation of anything for the commander.

The author concludes with notes on the search for imperfection, to which I will add my own sense that we get wrapped up in numbers and "proof" too often, to the detriment of what the Germans call "the feeling in the fingertips." Presentations should be as clear and rigorous as possible, but they should be considered a spark for discussion, not "the final answer."

There is a useful appendix, a presentations checklist, and one item on that checklist jumped out at me:

"What are the three toughest questions you are going to get from the audience?"

This nicely emphasizes my point that presentations are a tool for engagement. If the purpose is to inform, a memo with a graphic is a better option. If the purpose is to bring everyone together on the same page, prior preparation might include mini-engagements within each stovepipe. If the purpose is to stimulate the creation of new understanding and new inter-branch dialog, then the presentation is a living document, not just in the moment, but over the course of the week, month, or quarter that it covers.

I am surprised to find that hidden slides are not covered in this book, nor are slides as building blocks. The importance of geospatial and time series presentation platforms are also not included. Tufts remains best in class here. I think three-dimensionally: space, time, and tribe. What is each tribe thinking and doing over space and time?

This is not a three-star book, in my view, as some reviewers suggest. It is a solid four star book and as good as the time one chooses to invest in it. For five star books, look at Tufts as well as books on holistic analytics, true cost economics, values-based decision-making, and so on.

OK for starters.

A good beginner's book for those interested in building their own speakers without getting into heavy mathematics, passive electronics, complex woodworking, or folded horns. The book explains some the rudiments of speaker theory, and barely enough to design your own simple crossover network. The book has several economical projects which the author already debugged and are ready to build, including: the make and model of the speakers, list of passive components, schematic - which usually include extras like a Zobel network, and the cabinet dimensions. Their are several two-way projects and one three-way with a ten-inch woofer. Most designs use a soft-dome tweeter, if that's what you like. There is a list of raw component vendors in the back of the book. The designs for the ported boxes use the Thiel method, and I am finding that this may be conservatively sized toward the large side with respect to a flat bass response. The prose is a bit wordy, but still easy to read. Overall, I have learned a few things from this book.

Thorough introduction - worthless projects

Great introduction to loudspeaker design theory. Very good, in-depth discussion of crossovers with usable equations.
However, the projects and suggested projects aren't worth the paper they're written on. After studying the theories on cabinet and crossover design, and researching available drivers, I don't think many people are going to be interested in using the cheapest crap available for drivers. The projects all use Audax, Peerless, Seas, and Vifa drivers - the worst junk available. The authors themselves state that these drivers deteriorate quickly, and that all the drivers for one particular project can be purchased for seven dollars each! Are you interested in investing all the time required to learn, design and build a set of speakers and then invest $28 in four drivers? I'm certainly not.
The included software Crossover Modeling Program certainly has potential, and are useful for building the low-buck projects in this book. It includes treatment for virtually all the variables available for manipulation by the designer/builder. However, it's DOS based, almost impossible to navigate, only has data files available for the trash drivers used in the project, and, in fact, doesn't even have all the data files for all of those drivers. If they've got data files for good drivers like Focal, Eton, or even Dynaudio available on a web site or something, the program would be VERY USEFULL. And it is still usefull for modeling the crossover, but without linking in the driver specs, it's guesswork as to how the response curves are going to come out, let alone the actual speaker performance.
It's amazing to me that the authors give such a good treatment to everything, go to all the trouble of developing a good modeling program, and then build garbage. You're going to have more invested in this book than you will in the speaker projects themselves. They even go into buying and/or building fairly sophisticated test equipment - for what? To test your $15 driver? After discussing all the advanced considerations, the projects use surface-mounted drivers with defractions rings instead of routing out the cabintes to flush-mount the drivers. Are you going to put the hundreds of hours into a project and then forego the extra few minutes to properly rout out the driver openings? I'm not!!
Another serious shortcoming is that all the test data only goes down to 200 hertz, and almost all the response curves show a 3+ decibel rise in the 200-500 hz range. Well hey, bass response is where the going gets tough! But it makes the low-dollar, two- way, 5-6" 'woofer' projects look acceptable. The three-way projects are also a joke since the 'woofers' are still only 6.5". Believe me, there is going to be NO appreciable bass response at any significant volume level with ANY of these projects, and who wants to be crossing over to a subwoofer at 200 hz. I like 60-80 hz much better. And I'm not interested in having a system where a 5-6" driver is resonsible for handling everything from 3000 Hz on down - approximately seven octaves!
I DO RECOMMEND buying this book - and then tearing out everything after page 165 .

Disappointing after initial promise

If you are only interested in "spoonfed" recipe loudspeaker designs, this book will be great for you. It does cover some important theory initially and has some very clear and succinct illustrations, but I felt that it was a let down of my expectations, especially if you pay too much attention to things like the cover illustration (way too "hi-end" and complex for this book!).
Speaker building can easily become an addictive and engaging hobbie, and if you think at all that you may want more than a "casual glance" I'd strongly recommend "LOUDSPEAKER DESIGN COOKBOOK" by Vance Dickason instead. It may seem to be a more technical book but it has "staying power" and is a longer term reference text that the Weems/Koonce book.
On the positive side, if you do lack the time, inclination or confidence to get into the "nitty gritty", this book does have projects that feature relatively simple enclosure construction, require readily available (and not too expensive) speaker drivers and components and it has choice in terms of scale, complexity (to an extent) etc in the projects.

Luyben's book that came out in 1973 is a much better introductory book in Process Control for chemical engineers

This book dominated the field for what was in retrospect, a surprising length of time. Actually the book's success was because it had 32 chapters and lazy instructors simply covered 2 chapters per week at the expense of the suffering of the students who mostly had to endure the boredom of the presentation. Luyben's book that came out in 1973 is a much better introductory book in Process Control for chemical engineers.

Classic - Not current

This book was a classic that was dated 30 years ago when I first read it. If you need perspective or hisorical info from that time it is an excellent guide.

If you want a guide of info on current technology use the latest books by Shinsky or the current leading handbook (4th ed.) edited by Bela G. Liptak.

Great Review Guide for Studying for the Exam!

This is a great study guide for reviewing before taking the CompTIA Security+ exam.

I say a review because it assumes you know certain things first. For example, it assumes you know about networking, computers, and security in general. This book is not for the novice who doesn't know anything about PC security or networking and hopes to pass the exam.

The tips about what you should pay exact attention to are very valuable. There was a discussion early on in the book about security basics that I was just breezing through and the tip suggested that I could expect questions on the test regarding this because it was fundamental to security. Because I thought that was a "given" I didn't expect that there would be questions on the test about it. So the tips are very helpful.

In general, the book is a good study guide and review source for what you already know. The CD with the test review on it was also helpful. I shared it with someone who had actually tested and didn't pass and he said he wished he'd had that to study with before he took the test!

Decent book, but not enough by itself

Just passed the Security + 2008 exam with an 830. Used the book, plus Transcender and TestKing (2007 version) to prepare. I also used selective chapters from the Shon Harris CISSP book. Have to admit the test was a little harder than I anticipated. If you are a novice to Networks and System Administration, I highly recommend reading the CISSP book. It covers all the material, plus more. This book was a good book, but not enough by itself to adequately prepare for the 2008 Security + exam.

Provides everything needed for the right candidate

According to CompTIA's website, while not a prerequisite, they recommend that an individual sitting the Security+ exam have "at least two years of on-the-job technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security." They further recommend having the Network+ certification. My review of this book is based on an assumption that the individual using this book either meets these recommendations or, through some other means, has equivalent knowledge and experience.

As the author of an eLearning program that helps prepare people for the Security+ exam, I have considered the Security+ 2008 objectives more than most. This book covers everything you need to know to pass the Security+ exam - assuming you have the fundamentals of networking down. As an example, on page 15 (very early in the book) the authors assume you know what a port is when they say, "A network administrator can, for instance, move a service from its default port to a different port..." There is no explanation as to what a "port" is and, according to CompTIA's recommendations, there need not be.

I've given this as a simple example, but the book is filled with assumptions. It's probably a good thing. The book is nearly 700 pages now; imagine how large it would be if all of the knowledge were provided in this single resource. If you don't meet the recommendations that CompTIA suggests, I would encourage you to get this book along with your choice of a Network+ study guide. Then, even if you don't wish to acquire the Network+ certification, you will have the knowledge you need for the assumed information in this book.

I particularly liked the organization of this book. Part I deals with the theory of security (principles, organizational requirements, legal issues, etc.) and provides a foundation for the rest of the book. Part II deals with confidentiality in quite a bit more depth than is required by the Security+ exam. The coverage is closer to that needed for the CISSP exam. The next two parts, Security in the Infrastructure and Security in Transmission address the security needs for network access, data access and data transfer. The final part, excluding the Appendices, is Part V; here, issues related to operational and administrative security are addressed.

Overall, the information is presented in a sequence that makes it both digestible and memorable. I have to say that, in my opinion, this is the best Security+ book to come along yet.
