Every dog has its day, and the day of the Underdog has arrived

In the frontier days of the Old West, a Smith & Wesson sidearm was called the "Equalizer" because it leveled the playing field for underdog pioneers who otherwise might not have survived the daily life-and-death drama of that period. Today, the authors of the book - "The Underdog Advantage" - believe that the underdog concept has transformed into a useable principles that can be successfully exploited across a wide range of endeavors including, military, political and business arenas. Soundview likes this book because the great equalizer today is information and access to that information via the Internet where cheaply-produced amateur content and products are available along side similar offerings from the traditional monoliths of commerce. The book helps codify the strategic overview and tactical execution that works best for the insurgent business owner. But it's just as necessary for anyone seeking to protect market share against the swelling ranks of the underdog.

A smart, witty and compelling read...this book will have you charging to instill change in your company well before you've finished reading the last chapter.
The authors recommend simple steps to implementing sophisticated strategies such as "do the doable" or "move the movable". The case studies are persuasive and argue in favor of an offensive, no-compromise, approach to taking market share whether you're the leader in your space or the "underdog". The book will tell you who to enlist to win, why and how. Can a management book be inspiring? Yes.
Still what struck me the most is the writing style the authors' use which is as energizing and dynamic as the strategies they recommend.

A little disappointed.

Sorry, I read just too many biz books to give this 5 stars. It does have one theme which is profound, as described by others above. So I will just say that, besides that, it seems to be a jumbled mess of miscellaneous content from elsewhere woven through and through with the same "just do it, win, win, win" and "go for it, win, don't lose". The content is not original and hardly gives the reader one lick of ideas for executing anything. The football and beer commercial references get old fast and after several chapters I began to wonder if these guys ever built a business from the ground up, or did they just go rah rah rah for someone else. Lots of hindsight ... so what.

Good to decorate your shelves

This book spends too much paper explaining the Java history and why it is a good programming language. It is very, very boring. The advanced stuff begins after chapter 3, but they are not well explained. Well, all I can say is I really regret having bought this book, and I do not recommend it to any expirienced and short-in-time Java programmer like me.

Long on Words, Short on Details

As the author himself states, the first four chapters of the book are merely a "broad overview of Java's architecture". The majority of this material should be familiar to Java programmers. I was so bored that I skipped ahead to chapter five. The next five chapters are a little better, but again much of the material is basic Java architecture including class loading, verification, and garbage collection.
Finally, in chapter ten the author starts describing the bytecode instructions, but many details are glossed over, left out, or just plain wrong. For example, there's almost no description of how the bytecode verifier checks stack operations, and the description of the multianewarray bytecode when the number of dimensions in the bytecode does not match the number of dimensions of the type of the array is completely wrong. If the author had included a bytecode assembler, such as Jasmin, and had provided exercises, these weaknesses would have become readily apparent.
If you're a Java programmer and just want a basic overview of what goes on behind the scenes to allow your Java program to load and run, this book may be adequate. But if you intend on writing a compiler or a JVM, or writing code in bytecode assembly, or just learning what really goes on behind the scenes, I'd recommend one of the other books on the JVM.

Sadly the cover art is the best part!

It is fare to say Mr. Newman is very competent programming and using Linux. The one star rating has more to do with content and publishing rather than a knock on Mr. Newman. It was obvious he was under time constraints and that this was his first book. He spends more time talking about features that are not working yet or that he wants to implement, than the process to build the robot in his book. The majority of the book is short descriptions without depth. The title and the table of contents are very unreflective of the text contained in the book. The book has 155 pages of "content" and 120 pages of Appendix. The code in the 119 pages of Appendix A while well written could have been included on a CD and much more detail added to the book. It reads, looks and is a rush job. It is clear Mr. Newman has skills and a firm grasp of Robotics and Linux. It is also very clear that this TAB book is a bust. I returned the book. If you are looking for an in-depth Linux and Robotics book then you are much better off with Open-Source Robotics and Process Control Cookbook: Designing and Building Robust, Dependable Real-time Systems

By Lewin Edwards. I bought this at the same time I bought Mr. Newman's book. I also own Lewin Edwards first book.

To much of a title for what's in the book

One would expect to see how implementing C or C++ robotic applications using real time Linux embedded devices, or inexpensive hardware, would be. Instead, the book guides you on how to build a robot using a PC running Linux (mini-ITX format). All the code is in Java which is not an open source platform, and its downloadable listing takes about half the book. Nothing is covered in depth. More than half of the other book's halve presents information you may already know before purchasing the book, and the rest is easy to get from many robotic sites on the internet.

If I could have picked the content before, I wouldn't bought it.

Not a how-to book on "Linux Robotics".

I've been looking forward to Mr. Newman's book since his postings earlier last year on a robotics forum. I find the subject of incorporating a mini-itx computer with the Linux operating system into robots fascinating and I want to do the same. From this book, I understand he has working robots using this configuration. I'm sure I could learn a lot from Mr. Newman on this subject. I wish this book had provided insight into the pitfalls, tricks and details that a Microsoft Windows user could benefit from to accomplish his same results with Linux. I feel this book falls too short on the Linux content as implied by the book's current title. This would otherwise be a good book if it were renamed.

I found the mention of Linux related topics on approximately 25 out of 155 pages in this book. This is excluding the 119 pages of Java source code in Appendix A.

Chapter 1. Mentions Linux on 9 of 25 pages where the author describes in general terms that he is using Gentoo Linux and describes generalized reasons why you might want to use Linux.

Chapter 2. I didn't find any mention of Linux.

Chapter 3. Mentioned Linux on 3 of 15 pages. The author describes in general terms that a Linux motherboard can be a master node on the network. He discusses using USB devices with Linux.

Chapter 4. Mentioned Linux on 3 of 16 pages. He revealed that Linux is not a real-time operating system. Motherboards using the FTDI chipset seem to better support Linux. The author stated that he had to write a USB driver for Linux but gave no detailed information.

Chapter 5. I didn't find any mention of Linux.

Chapter 6. Mentioned Linux on 3 of 10 pages. In this chapter he describes where he found text to speech source code.

Chapter 7. Mentioned Linux on 1 of 15 pages. He mentions that some high-level open source vision systems are easier to work with under Linux than others. Another general comment was about video drivers for Linux.

Chapter 8. I didn't find any mention of Linux.

Chapter 9. Mentions Linux on 2 of 8 pages. He describes Joone as a nice Neural Network Interface that works under Windows and Linux. He admits that he runs his on a Windows laptop but it could run on Linux.

Chapter 10. Mentions Linux on 5 of 17 pages. The author's wireless Linksys network card is not part of the Linux kernel but is supported in Gentoo. This chapter makes other general comments regarding Linux, WiFi, and NFS.

I don't fault the author for this book; other materials in this book are of value to some readers. It makes a good introductory book for someone interested in learning about robotics topics. I respect Mr. Newman for his contributions to the robotics forums.

I do however fault Tab Books for the title and promotional material surrounding this book. I'll be wary of their books in the future. Perhaps a more appropriate title would be "My Robot Uses Linux" or "Java Robotics". This is not a how-to book on creating your own "Linux Robotics" projects.

What can I say... It's THE book

This is THE book as far as quick books goes. It will not tell you the secrets like some of the other books. But it is a definitive manual on the program. Do youself a favor and buy the other two books. "QuickBooks 2009 The Missing Manual" and "QuickBooks 2009 Solutions Guide" to go along with it. One of those three will most likely have the answers that you are looking for.

This book has saved me lots of time and stress. No more calling the Intuit helpline and attempting to communicate with someone in the Philippines. The book is well written in non "techie" English and very complete. I highly recommend every QuickBooks user keep a copy handy.

Hooked on Quickbooks

I have used Quickbooks since 1996 for my business and as a church treasurer. When I sold my business and became self-employed I thought about using Quicken instead since it was cheaper. I did not like it and struggled all year (2008) using it. Ended up not keeping up. Bought Quickbooks 2009 and will get back to this easy to use program. If you can write a check in your checkbook you can use Quickbooks. You don't even have to use everything that it can do if all you want is to write checks and bills. You will discover how useful some of the other options within can help you manage your company whether its a multiple employee one or just a one owner/employee. I will not stray away again.

What Are “The Sailor’s Classics?”

No one meets the ocean on quite such intimate terms as the sailor in a small boat. No one experiences a solitude more absolute than that encountered by long-distance single-handed sailors like Joshua Slocum or Bernard Moitessier. Since the early nineteenth century, when Byron and Shelley put to sea in their own boats in order to set themselves adrift in nature at its most turbulent and unruly, writing and sailing have gone hand in hand.

There have been writers who sailed—Wilkie Collins, Joseph Conrad, Robert Louis Stevenson, Hilaire Belloc, Jack London, E.B. White, William Golding, John Barth, Thomas McGuane, Geoffrey Wolff—along with a multitude of sailors who wrote, from Slocum and John Voss to Tristan Jones and the father-son team of Daniel and David Hays. After nearly two hundred years, the literature of small-boat voyaging under sail is enormous, and every publishing season sees more additions to the list.

It is the function of The Sailor’s Classics to recognize and celebrate the relatively small number of truly important books in this library. Some have been chosen because the voyages they describe are themselves of unignorable merit; some because the sheer brilliance of their writing demands their inclusion. Most combine in equal parts serious nautical interest with literary excellence.

As general editor of the series, I am always trying to keep in mind the bookshelves on my own 35-foot ketch. A proper ship’s library isn’t restricted to books with boats in them, of course; I wouldn’t happily set sail for more than a day or two without novels by Dickens, Trollope, Evelyn Waugh, and Saul Bellow, and poetry by Pope, Keats, Tennyson, Hardy, Philip Larkin, and Robert Lowell. The big question is which small-boat voyages can stand up in such exalted literary company? Not very many is the honest answer, and half the function of an editor is to know what he must reject. The books that won’t figure in the series are as important as those that will.

We won’t be publishing quaint curiosities. Period charm does not make a classic, and though I have a soft spot for, say, Nathaniel Bishop’s Four Months in a Sneak Box (1879), and an even softer one for Maurice Griffiths’ The Magic of the Swatchways (1932), they won’t be found in The Sailor’s Classics. Nor will the many salty “yarns” full of the faded yo-ho-ho of generations past. Whimsical accounts of family vacations afloat (the obligatory adventure with the dog and the dinghy...) will be left to gather dust in peace. So will all those melancholy solo voyages in which the writers go to sea in order to discover themselves.

There remain the books whose vigor has not dimmed with the passage of time, whose voice is as alive and meaningful now as it was on their first publication—the books that should be essential reading for every literate sailor. No. 2 in the series is Richard Maury’s The Saga of Cimba, first published in 1939; No. 4 is The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst by Nicholas Tomalin and Ron Hall, first published in 1971. They are perfect examples of what I mean: one a loving close-up portrait of the sea in all its moods, written by a master mariner with an astonishing literary gift; the other a study, by two journalists, of a man who lost touch with reality during the course of the first singlehanded round-the-world yacht race. Each—in its very different way—is an indispensable book. Each contributes an important thread to the larger pattern in the carpet, which is the great, various, and intricate design of the literature of small-boat sailing.

The Sailor’s Classics will surprise our readers with its richness and complexity. Since Homer’s Odyssey, the voyage has supplied one of the classic forms in literature—both as a grand metaphor for life itself in the long passage from birth to death, and as a sequence of tests and adventures. Equally, the boat (and especially the small boat) has long stood as a symbol of selfhood—a fragile ark bearing the journeying soul to its destination. Hilaire Belloc put the matter beautifully in The Cruise of the Nona:

The cruising of a boat here and there is very much what happens to the soul of a man in a larger way... We are granted great visions, we suffer intolerable tediums, we come to no end of the business, we are lonely out of sight of England, we make astonishing landfalls—and the whole rigmarole leads us along no whither, and yet is alive with discovery, emotion, adventure, peril and repose. On May 27, 1901, Captain John C. Voss, accompanied by journalist Norman Luxton, put to sea in the Tilikum, a 38-foot dugout canoe. Joshua Slocum's best-sell, Sailing Alone Around the World, had been published the year before, and Voss and Luxton's goal was to make a name for themselves by circling the globe in a vessel smaller than Slocum's Spray. Tilikum was just 5 feet wide and drew a mere 24 inches fully loaded. Outfitted by Voss with a deck, a small keel, three stubby masts, a cockpit for the helmsman, and a tiny cabin, Voss's canoe was one of the oddest craft ever to attempt a deep-sea voyage. Her crew, too, was mismatched. Voss was a professional sailor who had been pushed ashore by the decline of commercial sail. Luxton, a nautical innocent, was along to record the voyage for posterity.

More than three years later, Tilikum arrived in England after a voyage of 40,000 miles--a journey fraught with perilous and exotic adventures on both land and sea. Luxton abandoned the boat in the South Seas, and his replacement was lost overboard in a storm. But Voss carried on, and in 1912 - 13 he wrote The Venturesome Voyages of Captain Voss, the book that established him alongside Slocum as one of the greatest small-boat navigators of all time.

This volume in The Sailor's Classics restores in its entirety Captain Voss's account of his adventure in the Tilikum, together with the more noteworthy of the two remaining narratives in Voss's original book, a voyage through a typhoon in the 19-foot yawl Sea Queen. About the Author

After working his way up from cabin boy to ship's master, Captain John C. Voss drifted ashore in 1895, becoming a hotelkeeper and family man in Victoria, British Columbia. He returned to the sea in 1897 to pursue fortune and adventure in small boats and later as a commander of several sealing schooners. Most details of his life, origins, and even his death are lost in obscurity.

Jonathan Raban is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the editor of The Oxford Book of the Sea, and author of ten critically acclaimed books, including Passage to Juneau. He is the winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Heinemann Award for Literature, and received the New York Times Editors' Choice for Book of the Year for Old Glory and Bad Land. Can't Keep a Good Man Down

I just finished reading this and I couldn't stop reading it. What began as a publicity stunt ended as a real adventure. Two things stand out. First Captain John Voss is very good at capturing his own emotions and those of his ever-changing First-Mate and he records both the good and the bad. Second his observations on small boat handling and his ingenious solutions to fix all manor of problems including the destruction of his boat in a shipyard are a good read. I got a lot more from this book than I expected.

Outstanding story: Incredible voyge

Voss is more than just an expert sailor. He is cunning and has a genius for understanding the sea in all of its moods. The story is every bit as good as any other sea tale including Slocum's and Chichester's stories. Voss describes, in a matter of fact way, conditions that would frighten even the saltiest of sailors. To imagine being in those situations in a modified canoe is all the more incredible. Yet he survives and describes in great detail his recommendations for small boats in large breaking seas. And swears that a small boat can be comfortable in such conditions if handled properly and if the equipment is up to it. Although obviously dated in many respects his love of the sea and his understanding of how to survive the worst of it are timeless. I have read several of the great sea tales over the years; I don't know how I missed this one. It was a joy to read. He uses some very old nautical terms ("We made a board to shore." I think was one of his statements) but a good dictionary usually put me back on course.

The Greatest Adventure At Sea Ever Told

I am not someone you would normally find reading a book on high sea adventure but for other reasons I purchased this book and I was hooked. It is a wonderful story full of humour, adventure and suspense. The characters become alive, paticularly Captain John C. Voss and you feel you are making the journey with him. The story is compelling and the reader finds it difficult to put the book down. The book actually contains two stories but the one that captured my attention was the journey on the Tilikum with Norman Luxton. The story awoke an interest in me to the point where I continued to research the characters and the vessel and the story of what happened to the Tilikum after she reached Margate, England. The Tilikum just celebrated her 100th anniversary of her departure from Oak Bay (Victoria, B.C.) where they have erected a plaque. She has been fully restored complete with new rigging and is now on display at the Maritime Museum in Victoria. For a book to interest a reader to the point where she will track down the vessel in order to see her means you have a very powerful and well written story.
