Projects are impractical

Many projects mentioned here need additional and heavy investments. Most readers may not be owning such expensive commercial / scientific equipments needed to carry out the projects.

Wish I'd read it before buying it, this book was a waste of money.

Having an interesting high-altitude ballooning and aerospace I figured that this book would be a good way to learn about some things I've not been exposed to yet. I'm generally a fan of the other books in the Projects for the Evil Genius series so I took a gamble that it would be interesting, engaging, and educational.

It is none of those things. In fact, it's waste of money.

Much of the book consists of "buy this product and read the manual" with a liberal spicing of "buy this kit, build it according to instructions, and use it" without any context, helpful tips, or other sources of information. This book is pretty thin on actual content and reads more like a catalog of someone's favorite gadgets without any helpful information.

Don't buy this book as it is a waste of paper. Somebody dropped the ball over at McGraw-Hill when they thought this book would be a good idea. A real disappointment.

Evil yes, Genius no

This is an astonishingly horrible waste of paper. I love astronomy and I like some of the similar "Evil Genius" series. I appreciate the fact that this book was apparently written for the absolute beginner in mind. But it is dreadful. A typical "project" involves buying an expensive piece of equipment, and then simply being told to use it. (Eg Project 10.) Project 15, supposedly telling the reader how to launch a CCD camera on a model rocket, never even mentions how to install or activate the camera! Other "projects" simply restate the assembly instructions for a specific telescope or other piece of gear which already comes with instructions. Project 27 says, "Use a shortwave radio." Uh huh, for what, and what does it have to do with astronomy? Other projects show a few equations scribbled by hand, with the expectation the reader will figure out how to use them (and can read the poor handwriting.) I could almost think the whole book is a joke, it is so pathetic. This should be taken off the shelves.

Good practice for Miniboards

If your school uses miniboards for anatomy and histo, you should get this book. I thought the questions were on the harder side compared to the rest of the questions on the miniboard, so I suggest going through the BRS questions and studying first before going through the Pretest questions. If you do well on Pretest, you'll do well on the miniboards. If you don't understand a question, the answers have pretty thorough explanations. And if you still don't get it, each answer lists the page numbers for the main texts on that topic, like Moore for anatomy and Junqueira for histo.

Decent practice problem book

As a book to come back to review once you've learned all systems and pathology, this book might be good. If you're trying to study for a class (such as Anatomy, Histology or Cell Biology), and want to use this book to focus you on boards - oriented material, this book falls short. The questions are very few and far between, especially in the Histology section, and all the pictures are in black and white! Who looks at anything in histology in black and white??? Otherwise, the questions are difficult, but only in that they combine concepts such as disease processes, immunology, etc.

This is a great review book for the USMLE. It has a number of questions on various topics in USMLE format and the best part are the detailed, descriptive answers that are at the end of each section.

About the Author
Harry Colestock is an electrical engineer who designed and built automation systems for over 40 years. A specialist in robot productivity improvement, he has analyzed robotics for hundreds of companies in the auto industry as well as other high-volume industries. As chief engineer of Advanced Technology and Testing at Ingersoll-Rand, Mr. Colestock led the effort in the design and installation of some of the most advanced robotic systems in the world. His last job, before retiring, was the design and installation of an entire assembly and test line for the automatic assembly and testing of the six cylinder engine for General Motors' Holden division in Melbourne, Australia. He now lives in Petoskey, Michigan.

Outstanding robotics reference

Now that robots have become more affordable, they are "trickling" down into smaller businesses and being used for more unexpected and varied tasks in larger enterprises. This book will have you thinking about new ways to employ robotic systems and machine vision in your operations. There are numerous descriptions of successful robotic implementations, an excellent section on productivity of robotic systems, and clear descriptions of methods of calculating payback. Very helpful as well when working with management to get approval of a new robotic system. Recommended!!!

Only one CD-not whole book

This was not the full audio book. It was only the intro . The item was one CD and only 50 minutes. Not exactly sure what happened but I do not feel that I received what was expected . I still want the whole book on audio, however I am afraid to purchase it again for fear the same thing will happen .

Still has legs after 20 years, but they are getting tired

I read the original of this book 20 years ago and many of the concepts stuck with me all these years. I decided to reread it and see how the updated version would feel. Well, the basic principals are still thoughtful and it's interesting to see how some of the initial predictions have turned out. In most cases, they did a pretty good job and in some they missed. I was hoping to see more recent examples of how some of the newer market leaders followed the methods elaborated here, such as Google, Amazon, eBay, etc, but they did not add these in the update. All in all, a good read of concepts as a broad brush from a strategy perspective.

Marketing 101

Regardless of whether you like the "warfare" analogies or not, the concepts discussed in this book is Marketing 101 for marketers.

First Ries/Trout explain which method of attack your company should use depending on its position in the marketplace. Then they describe what each position should do. Then they use some great classic case studies like the beer wars, cola wars, and computer wars.

Usually I hate these "outdated" books but the content in here is classic. They've updated the book and critiqued their own predictions made 20 years ago. For example, with over 50% of the PC marketshare, they were certain that IBM would remain the leader. Ooops.

Highly recommended for marketers.

Good information, hard to keep focus.

This book has some really good info in it, if you can stick with it. The book places few pictures within each chapter, and every pages looks the exact same. Four columns, black and white, four hundred pages. Reading can become exhausting and dry very quickly. I'd suggest finding something to do for a minute or so in between every few pages.

Incisive and thorough academic preparation

As an SAT teacher, I first took notice of the earlier-edition Amazon reviews that frankly identified the book as a tool capable of reaping major rewards, provided the student invests time and hard work. I reiterate those sentiments, and recommend the book to those willing to shore up their skills to tackle the SAT, and beyond it the lifetime of academic challenges.

A no-non-sense tone underlies the book. Because of the style, a reader might either take comfort from recognizing the traditional voice of school instructors, or shy away in search of quick fixes. In my case, I acknowledged indebtedness to my high school teachers for developing me with the conventional wisdom. The reader could seamlessly absorb this book into high school education.

Onto some specifics:
.The outstanding essay section fashions the student, step by step, into a logical thinker capable of wielding the power of language. Educators might find intellectual familiarity with Joseph Williams' college text, Style. The content, however, is accessible to a high school student willing to learn.

McGraw-Hill's SAT 2008

This book gives terrific practice tests and sound advice to students preparing for the SAT. Students improve their scores through a sensible approach of practicing by taking mock exams, and there is plenty for them to learn at the same time. All sections give succinct test taking advice as well as comprehensive conceptual and practical information. My child benefited greatly from using this book - and I learned a few things too!

Excellent SAT prep and more

I've been teaching for over twenty years and done a bit of SAT tutoring, and I found this book terrific. The range and clarity of the practice questions and explanations are great preparation for the test, and the study tips are of use for and well beyond the SAT. That's double value--immediately practical, and naturally encouraging of general good habits for life long learning.
Unlike some SAT prep programs, this one is not cynical or smarmy. It doesn't propose a besting of the test or a quick fix but gives solid, comprehensive preparation, with common sense and savvy, in a tone that's both wise and with it.
