David Burch is the founder and president of the Starpath School of Navigation (www.starpath.com) and the author of nine books on navigation, including Radar for Mariners and Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation. His articles appear in Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, Sailing, Sea Kayaker, and elsewhere. A past Fulbright Scholar with a Ph.D. in physics, Burch has more than 70,000 miles of ocean sailing experience, ranging from the Arctic to Tahiti. He has sailed across the Pacific twelve times, three times navigating winning yachts in the Victoria - Maui Yacht Race. good material, honest expectations, and you'll need to practice

For starters, I have the Kindle edition which is fine and I can see no noticeable loss in readability. In fact it's probably one of the better Kindle formatted books I've come across. This book is not a secret list of simple techniques that will guide you around the world safely if your GPS packs in and your sextant cracks in half. Navigating without GPS is just as difficult as it always has been, and even more so without handy devices like sextants and scientific calculators.

The knock on this book is that it correctly reflects the reality of emergency navigation. You're likely to lose some, but not all, of your navigational gear. Maybe you have a sextant but no almanac. Maybe you have compass and a fried GPS. Maybe you're in the polar regions, but chances are you're in the tropics or middle latitudes. Maybe you have nothing but a wrist watch.

Because each of these scenarios presents different variables, your approach needs to be flexible and as such so is the format of the book. There is a lot of "you could do it this way if you have x and y but not z". It's a bit confusing at times, but it's also representative of what a true emergency navigation experience will be like. Martians won't beam down and take all your gear, instead a lightning strike or rollover will render most of it inoperable.

Additionally, you'll need to practice these techniques. This isn't something that you keep in your ditch bag, instead there is a lot of information that you will need to regularly practice in order to have a realistic chance of using successfully.

Although this book is titled "Emergency Navigation" it is about finding your way via the heavens, the "old" way if you will. David presents the topic in a light way and the pages explain thoroughly what needs to be done and why. Any sailor will benefit from reading this. [...]

Emergency Navigation, 2nd Ed

This book is not about what to do in an emergency, it is about what to do always. All of the techniques should be practiced all the time while on board. Electronic navigation should almost only be used for confirmation purposes.

The message in the book is quite powerful and the techniques to the point. The book is well written in easily understandable terms.
I used some of these techniques on two Atlantic crossings and was quite pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of one's plots once you get the techniques under the belt.
A good book to read for all those who venture out on the wide blue sea. A must read before you depart and a good read even for experienced sailors.
Very useful indeed.

Gap is too large between amounts of loans

In my opinion, this book is worthless, and I am surprised at the positive reviews. There is an unreasonably large gap between amounts, and this makes it of little or no value unless you happen to have a loan of exactly the "right" amount. For example, it jumps from $5,000 to $10,000. Worse (if you are buying a home), it jumps from $50,000 to $100,000. What about the $50,000 that is ignored? This book is going in the trash because it is not worth the cost of postage to send it back.

I can recommend two other books of amortization tables that are much more comprehensive (and the print is even more readable)--that is, Barron's Financial Tables for Better Money Management: Mortgage Payments (Solomon, Marshall and Pepper) and Monthly Interest Amortization Tables (Sherman, Contemporary Books).

One of the world's three major offshore races (along with the Fastnet out of England and America's Newport Race to Bermuda), the 630-mile course from Sydney, Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania, is a test of skills, guts, and endurance in notoriously unpredictable, fickle waters--and in any weather.

On Boxing Day, 1998, the 115 boats jockeying at the starting line off Sydney's Nielsen Park Beach had been warned that low-pressure weather systems were conspiring to guarantee a wild and chancy race. Yet few sailors anticipated the ferocity of the storm that descended around two o'clock the next morning, whipping up gale-force winds and waves tall enough to send 25-ton yachts "spearing into midair," then "plunging down into the trough ... like repeatedly launching a truck off a 30-foot ramp and awaiting the crash." Joining the summer's books on the treacherous Vend?e Globe sailing race (Derek Lundy's The Godforsaken Sea and Pete Goss's Close to Wind), Mundle's effort is the first of three forthcoming titles about the 1998 Sydney-Hobart yachting race (Pocket is publishing Martin Dugard's account in September; Little, Brown will offers Bruce Knecht's next year). In that race, seven boats were abandoned, five sank, six people died and 55 sailors were hoisted by rescuers from the impetuous seas. Seasoned journalist Mundle, himself a three-time Sydney-Hobart veteran, writes a knowledgeable account of the 115 boats and 1135 competitors that left Sydney Harbor on December 26, having precious little warning about the brutal cyclone that awaited them in the perilous Bass Strait. When the seas began towering to the height of five-story buildings, sailors were tossed about their yachts like rag dolls in a malevolent washing machine. Mundle, who covered the race for Australian television, deliberately sails around the tempest of controversies that followed the event, preferring to treat the story as a straight job of blow-by-blow reportage. While his careful plotting of a dozen boats' travails is certainly of interest, a surreal sense of dispassion pervades the text like an eerie calm found in the eye of a storm. Nonetheless, moments of poignancy stand out. One strung-out sailor hallucinates a monkey sitting atop a jagged stump of mast, while several others vow that spending hours in a wrecked cabin full of vomit, diesel fuel and salt-water convinced them to change their lives. This is the first of several expected books about the disastrous 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. Only 44 of the 115 yachts that started the race finished, five yachts sank, seven were abandoned, six sailors died, and 57 racers had to be rescued from the hurricane-strength winds and up to 90' swells. Mundle, a sailor and journalist who reported the awful tragedy live on Australian TV, relies on 124 interviews with survivors to relive the terror and excitement of a storm every bit as fierce as that described in Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm (LJ 5/15/97). He discusses weather conditions and Australian search-and-rescue operations as well. Though it doesn't really offer any nautical advice on how to weather extreme conditions, as does K. Adlard Coles's classic Heavy Weather Sailing (LJ 10/1/68), this tale should warn offshore sailors that there are indeed times when even best craft can founder. Fast, furious and informative. READ THIS BOOK!

When I decided to read this book, I actually started with another book on the subject recommended by Sports Illustrated. Based on Amazon reviewers I selected this one and wasn't disappointed.
Mundle attempts to show the personal side of the individuals as well as the intense struggle on each boat and helicopter. This is a spellbinding story which he did a good job of relaying. I learned about sailing but more importantly, I learned what it felt like to confront your worst nightmare come true.
This is a great subject correctly described by the author and as a bonus, the pictures in the book are good also. Off-coast sailing? Not for me after this book.

A pretty good read. The story jumped around a bit, but you can keep up with it. The map toward the start was a big help in locating where the accidents happened. The pictures could have used a little more explaining.

Early stage diabetes can be managed easily with a disciplined

approach consisting of diet control and daily exercise. The

authors point out that an increase in blood glucose damages

Good information for the diabetic.

I was diagnosed diabetic 5 years ago and control this disease thru diet and exercise and am constantly on the lookout for information and recipes. I particularly like the manner in which the nutritional analysis shows both the analysis for the "serving" but also how much of that constitutes a "fruit and vegetable" serving. The book is too new to me to have tested very many of the recipes but those I have are delicious. The information about diabetes is also very good. Wish I had discovered this book 5 years ago. Thanks.

I did not buy this book but made the mistake of paying for recipes on line. I would rather go without than eat such nasty tasting food. The desert recipes all have stevia extract in them which leaves a nasty after taste. Tried one bread recipe and it was almost inedible. All the recipes are extremely high calorie and high fat. All of them have some type of coconut oil or coconut milk in them. If your into that diet there are much better things to eat. The deserts definitely don't help with any sugar cravings. Also keep in mind that the bread and desert recipes all call for very expensive organic ingredients. Diabetes can be managed without subjecting yourself to this food and the average diabetic probably can't afford it anyway. I will continue on a diet of whole foods - foods with only one ingredient and avoid high Glycemic Index foods.

Great Info - Not Just for Women

A friend of mine (a woman) suggested that I take a look this book. I was skeptical at first because of the title, but I found that many of the strategies detailed in the book were just as applicable for men as for women. I was especially interested in the chapters on developing key leadership skills, building effective networks and communication. The many quotes and insights/experiences from CEOs and other senior executives were helpful to put the topics of the book into perspective - great for comparing notes. I plan to share the book with both my male and female colleagues.
