Lab and diagnostic tests book

I wanted this book because the doctors that I type dictation for use lab tests that are very similar, such as BMP and BNP, and it is very helpful to know what chemical tests are in each one, and for what system they are used in. This book helps me to determine what the doctor is saying, and what test they are using in their dictation.

Not an index included. You literally have to flip test by test until you find the one you are looking for. Might be a great option as a hard copy. Very disappointed, what a waste of money.

About the Author

Mark Lester is an experienced grammarian, ESL expert, and college professor. He was the founding chair of the ESL department at the University of Hawaii, which is now considered one of the best ESL programs in the United States. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Grammar and Usage in the Classroom, the most widely used college grammar textbook in the country. For McGraw-Hill Professional, he authored McGraw-Hill's Essential ESL Grammar and with Larry Beason he coauthored The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage. Lester is Eastern Washington University professor emeritus of English (he was formally chair of the English department). Dr. Lester obtained his BA in philosophy and English Literature at Pomona College and his PhD in Linguistics from UC Berkeley. He also holds an MBA from the University of Hawaii.

In this absorbing survey of oceanography, Prager (Furious Earth) and Earle (The Living Ocean: Understanding and Protecting Marine Biodiversity) chronicle the development of the science of oceans and the evolution of life within the briny deep and shallow estuaries. The authors narrate the "grand epic" of life's evolution from its earliest beginnings (between 4.5 and 1 billion years ago) to the flowering of sea life in the Cambrian period (about 550 million years ago). They examine the geological evidence of life's development, and the physical and chemical properties of the ocean-- the effects of oceans on climate, coastal upwellings, deep-sea circulation, rip currents and rogue waves--as well as the beauties and mysteries of sea life and, through accounts of various marine biomes, microbes and mammals, the tremendous diversity of marine life. Throughout, Prager and Earle debunk myths about the existence of Jaws-like sharks and other marine creatures. Finally, they contend that if the oceans continue to be exploited in the ways they have been over just the past 30 years, they may die. Therefore, the authors argue, governments must give high priority to the study of oceans simply because "to preserve the sea is to preserve life on Earth." Scientists and divers, Prager and Earle are well licensed to condense oceanographic knowledge in an overview of the subject that inculcates the integrality of the ocean to geological history. They proceed chronologically through the paleontological divisions of time (Paleozoic, Cenozoic, etc.) before turning to the aspects of today's ocean. They relate how the ocean arrived at its present chemical composition; how its currents and thereby global climate have been affected by the earth's rotation and the positions of drifting continents; and how vital the ocean has been to life's evolutionary epic. While considering each of these topics in oceanography--oceanic chemistry, geology, and biology--Prager and Earle recount the initial scientific investigations of the sea, such as the three-year voyage of the Challenger in the 1870s. They combine the development of the planet, the history of science, and an awareness of environmental stresses on the oceans to produce a worthy introduction to the 72 percent of Earth that is submerged. Take That You Cad!

The humble sea cucumber has a novel defense when attacked by a predator. It summons up its strength, and shoots all of its internal organs out its, uh, rear end directly into the face of its assailant. The dazed, disgusted fish, covered with a mucky mess, wanders off looking elsewhere for its lunch. Amazingly the sea cucumber has the ability to then regenerate all of its internal organs.
This book generally covers the same topics found in an introductory text of Oceanography. Oriented toward the general reader it skips the math, the chemical formulas, and other aspects of hard science that might frighten away the non-scientist. The first section takes one through the ocean's development from the Precambrian era to the present time. We then study the composition of the ocean, its currents and climate. After reading about tsunamis you will understand why the science in the movie The Poseidon Adventure was, um, all wet. In the ocean geology section, plate tectonics are discussed, and we read an interesting discourse on how Hawaii developed as a chain of small islands.
The largest section of the book deals with the ocean's biology. What is its best-designed fish (the tuna)? Why are fish able to drink salt water while we humans cannot tolerate it? When we say that a certain fish lives to a certain age how do we know that? We study its ears - read the book for the details.
The material presented was so fascinating that I often became frustrated. I found myself crying out, "Don't stop now; tell me more about that." When the author mentions that the Portuguese Man-Of-War was actually a colony of various organisms, I wanted to know more about how this could be. But, as usual, I was led off to another interesting topic. Another trivial complaint: while the book has some pictures and drawings, I frequently wished there were more of them. In the "news you can use" category I think she should have spent some time discussing formation and destruction of beaches (suggested reading on this topic: Against The Tide by Cornelia Dean).
I like to read science books, but I become increasingly depressed about some of what I read in those dedicated to the biological and earth sciences. Almost every author spends some time discussing the damage we humans are causing to the environment. Ellen Prager will have you close to tears when she tells you how we are destroying our marine environment.

Time Well Spent

This book flows to the reader with the pleasure of a good novel; yet, it delivers more information than most textbooks. I am a television producer by trade and enjoy a good story well told. I was on a cruise ship this last weekend and looked upon the sea with new understanding and fascination. Information is better retained when logically delivered. This has become a favorite on my bookshelf and now I am purchasing it as gifts for friends. My thanks to the authors.

Nice Introductory Text

This text gives a good overview of the various scientific disciplines that collectively make up oceanography and technical discussions are kept at a level that won't overwhelm science-phobes but will keep the interest of those more familiar with chemistry, geology, physics, and biology.

On the down side, the text is somewhat dry and the author seems a little reluctant to inject much of her personality into the book. Those that don't care for the more cutesy pop-sci writers like Gould might find this a relief, but the prose seems more appropriate for a text book than for a popular overview. That said, the book is still highly readable and enjoyable, and is recommended.

Jerry M. Linenger, M.D., Ph.D., at the completion of his mission to Mir, had spent more continuous time in space than any other male American astronaut. A Naval Academy graduate and physician, he holds advanced degrees from the University of North Carolina, the University of Southern California, and Wayne State University. The author of the best-selling memoir Off the Planet: Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir, he lives in Michigan with his wife, Kathryn, and their four young children.

A Bit Odd in Places

Jerry Linenger was the fourth NASA astronaut of a total of seven who served aboard the Russian space station Mir. His mission lasted from January 12, 1997, till May 24, 1997 giving him a total of 132 days in space. At the time, this was the longest duration flight of an American male. During his stay, Jerry Linenger became the first American to conduct a space walk from a foreign space station and in a non-American made spacesuit. He and his two Russian colleagues also performed a "fly around" in the Soyuz spacecraft, undocking from one docking port of the station, manually flying to and redocking at a different location. While living Mir, Linenger and his two Russian crewmembers faced numerous difficulties, the most severe fire ever aboard an orbiting spacecraft, failures of onboard systems and a near collision with a resupply cargo ship during a manual docking system test. These tales and many others are recounted in his other book, "Off the Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir."
In his latest offering, Dr. Linenger recounts these events as well as many others, using personal letters sent, via e-mail, to his 14 month old son and a few to his wife and mission control. It is quite clear from these letters that he was very proud of his young son, missed him and his wife a great deal and that he felt extremely isolated and alone. Several of the letters I found very refreshing, such as the need to honest (especially in this day and age); however, I also found many of the letters to be rather strange. Dr. Linenger goes into a great amount of detail about the equipment on the Mir, such as heat rejection system and the carbon dioxide removal system. I doubt most high school students could understand what he was trying to say. Maybe it's me, but if I were going to write letters to my toddler son, I would keep the technical descriptions simple. I would want him to be able to read my letter say by the time he was ten. The very technical sections within the book also take away from the general tone of the book of his isolation, missing his son, wife and the planet Earth. One letter to mission details his concern about safety, almost a foreboding of things to come on the next mission with Michael Foale.
I also found two glaring errors in the book. First, the liftoff thrust of the shuttle is not 7 million lbs, but 6.6 million lbs. Second, his description of the orbital mechanics is described incorrectly. He states, "We go faster in order to get up higher. As we slow down, our orbit lowers." The exact opposite is true. The lower the orbit the higher the velocity and the higher the orbit the slower the velocity. For example, communication satellites that are essentially stationary over the Earth (one orbit per day) are at an altitude of 23,000 miles. The space station, which orbits the Earth every 90 minutes, is at an altitude of 250 miles. As an astronaut, he should know better.
In conclusion, if you want to know what happen to Jerry Linenger aboard Mir, read his other book, "Off the Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir." If you want to know how he felt orbiting the Earth and his feelings of isolation, get this book.

When a star explodes in space, does it make a sound?

MIR has always been an anomaly. It shouldn't have been up there; it shouldn't have been up there THAT long and it is a testimony to human courage and audacity that the venerable station orbited for as long as it did.

Writing home to your son/ daughter is always a challenge for a parent. Will they understand what exactly I am trying to convey? Will the person reading this to them understand? Will they ever get to read it as I might not be alive? The book starts out fairly well, Mr Linenger's take is that he's hardly had time to be with his son. The reason to write to him becomes clearer and more focused as the book wends its way to the end.

I laughed. I cried (towards the end) and yes, I yawned at a few parts but I came away with what a beautiful book of a father's pseudo-monologue, Mr Linenger wrote and congratulations to him and the science team and all concerned, especially his wife, whose love comes through in his letters. It's a new side to the '...boldly go where no man has gone before." stuff.

Every dog has its day, and the day of the Underdog has arrived

In the frontier days of the Old West, a Smith & Wesson sidearm was called the "Equalizer" because it leveled the playing field for underdog pioneers who otherwise might not have survived the daily life-and-death drama of that period. Today, the authors of the book - "The Underdog Advantage" - believe that the underdog concept has transformed into a useable principles that can be successfully exploited across a wide range of endeavors including, military, political and business arenas. Soundview likes this book because the great equalizer today is information and access to that information via the Internet where cheaply-produced amateur content and products are available along side similar offerings from the traditional monoliths of commerce. The book helps codify the strategic overview and tactical execution that works best for the insurgent business owner. But it's just as necessary for anyone seeking to protect market share against the swelling ranks of the underdog.

A smart, witty and compelling read...this book will have you charging to instill change in your company well before you've finished reading the last chapter.
The authors recommend simple steps to implementing sophisticated strategies such as "do the doable" or "move the movable". The case studies are persuasive and argue in favor of an offensive, no-compromise, approach to taking market share whether you're the leader in your space or the "underdog". The book will tell you who to enlist to win, why and how. Can a management book be inspiring? Yes.
Still what struck me the most is the writing style the authors' use which is as energizing and dynamic as the strategies they recommend.

A little disappointed.

Sorry, I read just too many biz books to give this 5 stars. It does have one theme which is profound, as described by others above. So I will just say that, besides that, it seems to be a jumbled mess of miscellaneous content from elsewhere woven through and through with the same "just do it, win, win, win" and "go for it, win, don't lose". The content is not original and hardly gives the reader one lick of ideas for executing anything. The football and beer commercial references get old fast and after several chapters I began to wonder if these guys ever built a business from the ground up, or did they just go rah rah rah for someone else. Lots of hindsight ... so what.
