Not really a review, just a question.

I bought "Principles of Underwater Sound", because I hoped to find a description of the evanescent liquid-sound-pressure waves mainly responsible for the drop in pitch of resonators on being submerged in water. For instance, a submerged tuning fork oscillates at ~415 Hz, lower than 440 Hz by about a semitone. In the case of tapped drinking glasses, the corresponding frequency drop is greater than an octave. These evanescent waves are standing waves of limited spatial extension, with variable sound pressure and liquid-particle velocity but negligible density variation. In the book under discussion, I did not find a description of these evanescent waves. Are they treated in another textbook?

It is OK. I already had the other book of the same author, conversando en Ingles, and this one is pretty similar to me..., nevertheless it help me to practice and refresh several details of gramma and pronunciation

Well received by my students

I'm a certified bilingual teacher and have been involved in adult education for the past two years. Simply put, I teach English to non-speakers. I live on the Texas-Mexican border, and most of my students come from Mexico, with an occasional one from Central America. There were varying levels of education among them, but they all were eager to learn.

And they all appreciated this book. They commented on how much they liked having a book written in Spanish explaining the ins and outs of English.

This book puts a great deal of emphasis on grammar, and in this area it is excellent. It's weak on phonics teaching, although some words are spelled out phonetically in parenthesis. I would suggest that anyone who uses this book to teach should also have separate teaching materials about phonics.

No book can ever cover all of the ways people learn, including this one. But it's still a good book to use. It will benefit the students in giving them a comprehensive and step-by-step approach to the English language.

Very good in all respects--needs a larger format

This is a very well conceived ESL guide for the Hispanic student. It's presented in short lessons consisting of a modest list of new vocabulary, followed by exercises using the vocabulary. Very useful for one-on-one tutoring. My only criticism is that I'd want it in a much larger format, so the student can use it more like workbook. My copy is only 8.5 by 5.5 inches, about like an average paperback novel. Not adequately suited to the purpose size-wise, but otherwise excellent.

This outstanding 712 page text is the "go to" standard not only for introductory Information Management, but management in general. It is also very well written and completely appropriate for self study-- it also is not so "thick" with technology that you need a prof beside you to profit from studying it and interpret the many quality tables and examples.

All aspects of management today-- from real time transactions to long term project management and research-- are data mining intensive. Look at Amazon. Prime members can now choose the option "get it next day to zip code 12345." This is real time data mining for CRM, order and sales management-- driven by algorithms and adjusting scoring models based on your zip code, integrated with their shipping facility locations! An MBA without a deep BOK on IT is sunk.

I'm the CTO of a data intensive association (IABOK dot org) that organizes bodies of knowledge (BOKs) for IT, Engineering, ISO, IEEE, Math, technology, Data warehouses, libraries, etc. Today's body of knowledge in business management isn't just linear programming with spreadsheets and risk models, it also is knowing how enterprise IT integrates document management, Sarbanes Oxley, data mining, machine learning, networks, data warehousing, decision support, and future systems analysis and design. This is about leveraging IT assets to WIN in quality, service and price. These authors are at the leading edge of these fields, and their websites and personal attention make this text more than up to date on the latest theories AND applications of IT as applied to day to day PRACTICAL management.

Frankly, if you're in or going into management today, you're going into systems, no way of getting around it. If you're already in IT, you'll probably skim and reference. If you're a great manager but not up to speed in today's top systems uses for management, read and study. The examples are clear and relevant. Every function today uses scoring model algorithms and adjusts them with feedback monitoring, often in real time.

Coming from a tech background, the concepts and ideas presented in this book were not new. I feel it is an excellent selection for a non-tech MBA student, or for anyone wanting a high level overview of multiple areas on management information systems.

Good overview of IT, but interesting business ethics

This was required textbook for a college class. It provides an overview of the various IT needs and trends and describes how the available hardware, software or business partnerships work to meet these needs. It occasionally has side-by-side comparisons of the top options in the field and often has diagrams to illustrate how a system works. Each chapter is sprinkled with several real-world stories and case studies that detail how companies are dealing with IT challenges and opportunities. The text was well edited and easy-to-read.

While the text had good generalized information, the author's opinions were sometimes troubling. In Chapter 2 he states, "Not only do firms need to compete with other firms in the marketplace, but they must also work to create significant barriers to the entry of new competition." Is keeping innovation off the market really a good goal for IT? The same chapter describes locking in customers and suppliers as a strategic initiative to, "deter them from abandoning a company for its competitors or intimidate them into accepting less profitable business arrangements." Are intimidation tactics ethical? In chapter 14, after a fairly neutral discussion of outsourcing and off-shoring, he discusses visa sponsorship. "...a more recent and troubling trend is the increasing motivation to find highly qualified IT/IS talent. ...firms are looking at the science and engineering graduate [sic] of other countries to fill their needs. ...The jobs are staying here but the labor is being imported." Why is visa sponsorship so much worse than off-shoring? The wages earned boost the local economy and the recruited talent is often top-notch. Is the author disturbed by seeing new faces in the neighborhood?

As a computer science major, I had learned much of the technical content in other classes. It was an overview on IT history and trends, with emphasis was on business strategies and choices. It seemed more relevant for a manager who will need to approve partnerships and buying decisions than for a hands-on professional choosing the hardware or coding the software. The business principles and mindset were what I came away with after reading it.

As president of the American Society of Alternative Energy Engineers (ASAEE), I can fully endorse the lasting analytical power of this amazing text. Many texts like this, including some we're reviewing that have not yet been published, and slated for late 2009, cover policy, politics, global statistical inference, and multiple regressions of trend analysis for global supply and demand, but NONE come close to balancing the macro and micro in such fine fashion as ESE. This is a WORKING text, not just for policy, but for implementation. Don't let the ups and downs of barrel prices, or the emotion of global warming vs. cooling make you think this text is dated. The models are solid, sound, state of the art, and relevant in a timeless way-- changing the parameters will not change the underlying value of the models, contribution, and need for this text. This is a must for any engineer's library, whether doing policy work, design, or rubber hits the road project or community engineering. Applying an energy metaphor to the text, it's high wattage for low investment, a perpetuity rather than an annuity, green and permanent with frequent use, as well as a cherished place on your shelves, and renewable with the powerful updates, blogs and helpful additions this very ethical author keeps providing-- the gift keeps on giving. During my time as an undergrad at Cornell University, one of my favorite classes has been a renewable energy course taught by one of the authors, Lou Albright, with Energy Systems Engineering as the primary textbook. Apart from being clear, well-written, and well-organized, the book does a great job of blending background information, justification for technologies, discussion of practical issues, and quantitative analysis of systems in a manageable and engaging way. Working through it was very empowering and it played a big role in getting me excited about energy. It's also very accessible as a reference for specific projects. I would highly recommend it to other students interested in learning how to work with and analyze energy systems.

About the Author
James L. Bildner is a life-long sailor and avid recreational pilot who shoots the photos for his books from his own helicopter. He owns a chain of upscale gourmet food stores in the greater Boston area and cruises the New England coast in his 52-foot Hinckley, Windward. A member of the Cruising Club of America, Jim has pulled together a network of local contributors to vet and detail the piloting instructions in this book. Good but could be better

I found this guide very useful when I was cruising in Buzzard's Bay and Vineyard Sound. While the guide doesn't contain phone numbers or radio channels for the harbormasters, paired with a smart phone you can get most of the info you need. It would be nice if it contained this info as the most recent popular cruising guide for the area was last published around the late 1990s I believe. The visual guides are useful, and the channel markers are helpfully superimposed on the pictures so that you can clearly see where they are located in relation to land. It would be nice also if the anchorages were also marked on the photos so one could gauge their position in relation to the visual markers (obviously mooring fields are easily visible; anchorages less so).

THE book to have re: the beans

For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)
If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

A lifesaver

Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

Very good book, everything is simplified, easy introduction into subject, it is almost like being spoon fed.
Pathologic correlation's are given, it does not have all the biochemistry but major subjects are covered and author has conceptualized that makes everything easy.

Admittedly, I have no other knot book to compare this to, but it contains more information than I had expected.
If one is interested in learning some knots used by sailers and when each is used, this seems a good way to do so.

Unusable in original Kindle format.

I like this book a lot but will buy it in book form. The Kindle form separates captions from photos (so you can't tell which knot you are looking at). It also retains page number references on the photos -- which is not useful on Kindle. Finally, the formatting separates each step of the directions from the image that illustrates it. You may have a different experience on the larger DX.

A good way to describe this book is a cross between a textbook, a trade journal, and a catalog. Being definately a large volume, it attempts to cover a lot of information in bite sized chapters. I would think the best use for this book is as a reference. You can build some of the projects listed in it as stand alone applications, but they work best when combining them with your own ideas, or supplementing info from other book projects.

All in all, this book is a good addition to a robot reference library.

Good book for enthusiast wannabes

The book has lots of good ideas for small scale projects. Some of the projects are defined better than the others. Who knows, may be it can turn some wannabes into real enthusiasts.

Survey vs. How to

I enjoy the 3rd edition of this book. What it does well is that it breaks up the problem of building a robot into multiple sections in which builders get ideas on what to change for their robots. This includes changes in anything from what sensors to use to recommendations and ideas about building your own chassis from wood to plastic to well, whatever. It also gives you a nice reference to places to get parts and also references to other books to get even more information on individual topics. It doesn't really get into the level that other McComb books did such as the Lasers, Ray Guns, and Light Cannons: Projects from the Wizard's Workbench by Gordon McComb - it instead just briefly surveys a great many topics across a very very wide spectrum of possibilities. It's great for ideas- but it seems to lack a bit of a universal thread such as a representative building example that goes through the whole design process. But then again, it's not an engineering textbook... it's a bonanza.
