A fun, useful and interesting book to learn operation mgmt

I am currently attending an MBA program and we are using this book in one of our operations classes. Highly recommend this book to schools and students who would like to learn how to solve the supply and demand problem!

First, this book is very easy to read. Throughout the book, the authors used different examples to illustrate the various challenges in realistic settings such as the patient waiting and serving time at the interventional radiology unit. The readers can easily extend and relate the examples in real life.

Second, this book is good for the classroom setting as well as the self study setting. The book is organized in a way that each chapter is focused on one operations management problem and shows the systematic ways to solve the problem. For self learner, one can easily select the topics and chapters of his/her interest.

Also, I found the summary at the end of each chapter especially useful for me. To prepare my exams, I use the summary of key notions and equations in each chapter to make up my "cheat sheet".

Again, "Matching Supply with Demand" is a great book and I highly recommend it.

The most up-to-date Operations textbook

My experience with this book comes from teaching introductory Operations classes to MBA students at the Wharton School of Business. The book is unique in that it covers several exciting recent developments in Operations Management including such topics as revenue management, bullwhip effect, supply chain coordination and manufacturing flexibility. These issues are very well-received by students but so far have not been a part of any introductory Operations text I know of. Quantitative topics are explained using real-world examples with data coming from actual companies which allows for an entertaining read while preserving quantitative rigor of the material. Extensive sets of problems accompanying each chapter make the adoption process easy for instructors. Overall, this is a well thought-out book that has now been tested at Wharton for several years and hence has very few (if any) bugs that are so common in new textbooks.

Tackles complex issues simply, well integrated with course

I am an MBA student who has used this course book for our first year operations class. The book tackles difficult topics in a very easy to read way and is extremely well integrated with the associated case book and lecture notes. It provides the right level of detail, enabling students to pick up the tools or delve more deeply into the underlying mathematical constructs. The book does what it says on the label, teaching how to match supply with demand through analyzing process bottlenecks, queuing, lost customers, optimal inventory and yield management and supply chain management issues, such as the bull-whip effect and tackling double marginalization. This is a great introductory book to operations management.

A great reference book

About 4 weeks ago I started beginner french classes at the Sorbonne University in Paris. So far, it's proven to be an invaluable tool when trying to comprehend material that was taught in class but not fully explained or explored. Schaum's French Grammar does a marvelous job of explaining why something is written the way it is in really concise, logic and easy to understand manner. I highly suggest it if you're just beginning to learn French grammar.

On a sidenote, I also strongly recommend checking out Fluenz's Learning French DVDs. They've helped out a lot too!

Good Book for Learning Spanish Grammar

This is a hands-on book. It explains a point of grammar then provides an exercise that makes you put to work what you've just read by writing down answers. I took two years of Spanish in College, but then forgot about it for about 30 years, but now I'm going back and trying to review and remember all I once knew. This is an excellent book for doing that. However, the book presumes that one has a basic Spanish vocabulary. This is a grammar book, not a vocabulary building book. It does have a Spanish/English dictionary in the back. This book in combination with a book to expand one's Spanish vocabulary would be ideal.

What good is a workbook without the answers?

Unless you have a live in Spanish teacher, don't waste your money on this workbook. The exercises are actually very good, but if you are like me, it will infuriate you to discover there is no answer key.
Duh, if I knew what my mistakes were, would I be wasting my money on a workbook? "Advanced Spanish Grammar" by Marcial Prado; "Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses" by Dorothy Richmond; and The "Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice" by Gordon and Stillman all have answer keys and all are EXCELLENT!

There is an answer key!

I was surprised to read tonight, 9-9-02, that two past reviewers were irritated because they thought that there was no answer key to Spanish Grammar in Review. There is an answer key. The ISBN # is 0844276723. The publisher is McGraw-Hill Companies. The decision not to include the answers with the text was an editorial choice--many teachers do not like for their students to have the answers to the exercises while they are doing their homework. However, for learners working alone an answer key obviously would be quite helpful.
Spanish Grammar in Review contains a well-organized, easily-comprehended review of the basic elements of Spanish grammar plus a carefully selected series of increasingly difficult practice exercises to verify comprehension and to increase retention of the material.
As a note of explanation of the 4 star rating of my own book, the computer program would not accept my explanation without a rating, so I gave the book 4 stars. I know that students have, can, and will in the future learn a lot with it.

ASIC from a small business perspective

I bought this book a few months after it came out, and read it cover-to-cover. I recently picked it up off the shelf and reread it. It's truly excellent, and I am glad the author took the time to write it.

I own probably 10-15 books on VLSI, and this one is truly unique, because it is written from the perspective of a small business person as opposed to an academic or an engineer at a large company. It excels on two levels -- first, it does a great job of demystification and making the material accessible at a physical level. For example, the anecdote in the book that if you wipe your finger across the surface of the chip, the metal layers will slide right off. Or for instance, the advice on shopping for an epi microscope so can you see what is actually going on is a great way of showing the reader that the world of chip building is right there for them to see. The second level that it excels at is in terms of talking about how to do chips on the cheap. Too often books assume we have the latest tools from Synopsys or Cadence, and a full suite of a IP library. But this books assumes none of that.

Indispensable for USMLE step 1!

OK, this book isn't the best choice for in-depth learning of pharmacology - and you definitely shouldn't expect this from the resource which is only 178 pages long - but this isn't the main purpose of this title - it was created to be used as a RE-VIEW and it serves this purpose extremely well.
For in-depth study you should get 'Katzung and Trevor's Review of Pharmacology' or 'Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology'; these books are excellent, but, even though both claim to be 'reviews', who can reread their 600 pages again and again? at the same time, pharmacology tends to be forgotten in just a few weeks (even when it was learned very well in the past) and you have to refresh your memory again and again; and as your exam approaches you'll need more and more quick reviews because you'll not have enough time for the big resources; even though pharmacology is the best written subject in 'First Aid for the USMLE step 1', still it's too superficial and you should reserve that book for cramming just before the exam; so, you'll get a long gap in the middle between in-depth study and 'First Aid', which has to be filled; at this point of your preparation, you'll find that 'USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology' is very helpfull, well-written, well-illustrated and perfectly suited for quick and repetitive readings; it focuses on high yield facts, which will be heavily tested on USMLE step 1, without extraneous details, which may be important for wards or for the USMLE step 2 CK, but aren't necessary for step 1; for this reason 'Road Map' is much more useful for step 1 than 'Pharmacology for the Boards and Wards', which tries to reach everyone and, as a result, is less high yield for this exam; though this book is larger (256 pages) than 'Road Map', it contains more irrelevant information and less - relevant.

I've read already Lippincott's Illustrated review of pharmacology and others great resources and i am convinced that USMLE Road Map Pharmacology seems the most high yeld and fast review. It just goes direct what is important to know. Simple and Efficient.

I found using one book more effective than a thousand flashcards for reviewing pharm. Although this doesn't cover everything in my school's syllabus, it covered most of it, which is much more than I can say about first aid.

You could rely on the opinions of admissions officers, college counselors, and other "experts." Or you can learn from the real experts in the College Matters Guide to Getting Into the Elite School of Your Choice , and aim for the college of your dreams.

About the Author

Jacquelyn Kung founded College Matters while she was a student at Harvard. She graduated in 2002 and works at the Boston Consulting Group.

Melissa Dell was the College Matters seminar director and will be the organization's 2004-2005 managing director. She is currently a Harvard junior studying abroad in Chile.

Joanna Chen graduated at the top of her class of 1,100, won a Presidential Scholarship, and was accepted early by Harvard and other top schools.

AMAZING book--an absolute must read for students and parents

This book is absolutely AMAZING! I just got my copy a couple of days ago, and have already read it from cover to cover. Fred Hargadon, former Admission Dean of Swarthmore, Princeton, and Stanford raves about the book in the forward, and rightly so. I've read a lot of the books on the market, but never one that was this thorough. It's packed full of info on everything from the new format SAT to winning scholarships and financial aid to advice just for parents. And the informatin is wonderfully thorgouh--the authors are obviously very knowledgeable and i'm just glad that they decided to share everything they've learned with us.

Plus, i was surprised at what frank and straightforward information that this book contained from admissions deans and experts, in special inserts that supplemented what the authors wrote. I was also impressed that it seems to address a diversity of concerns, without droning on and on. Best of all, it is a great, fun read. Like Dean Hargadon said in the forward, the authors were obviously serious about the work, without taking themselves too seriously. This is a book that even a kid who hates to read can pick up and enjoy and identify with, as it is written by young people.

The motivation behind the book is also amazing. It was written by students from an acclaimed student-run non-profit called College Matters that has helped thousands of students apply to college. All proceeds from the book are benefitting a scholarship fund for underserved students. So i know that not only did i get a great read; the little bit of money i spent on the book all went to a great cause.

Overall, i would say if you are a high school student--or the parent of one--this is a book that you cannot afford not to read. The information contained inside could easily make the difference between getting in and getting rejected from your dream school, or winning or not the money to pay for your education wherever you go (BTW, despite the title, the book talks about applying to a wide variety of colleges, not just so-called elite colleges, so even if your not considering the traditional "elite" colleges, it will still be super useful).

Excellent for everyone

College Matters was founded by a Harvard student who have passed through the admission process and knew how difficult it was to find the right information about admissions to elite colleges. Motivated by the idea of helping other students who are in their admission process to elite colleges, she founded College Matters. College Matters is a non-profit organization composed of students who have been already admitted to elite colleges. These students are there to help you in your own admission process.

The College Matters Guide in Getting into the Elite College of your Dreams is the first book written by members of College Matters. Students from top colleges as Harvard, Brown, MIT, Stanford, Northwestern and Yale share their knowledge about the whole admission process and help you to build a strong application for the most selective colleges. It shows you how to make the most of your high school years by explaining you every part of the application and what matters the most. I was highly impressed about the book accuracy because, I am from Puerto Rico, and there were many things I didn't know about the admission process in United States colleges, but with this book, I could get to know everything I needed and it gave me a clear idea of how to use wisely these last High School years.

The books cover everything from acing the SAT and ACT (updated with information about the New SAT), and choosing the right classes on high school, to making an excellent essay and finding scholarships. Every chapter is written by an expert in the area; take the example of Evelyn Huang, from Stanford, who wrote the Financial Aid chapter, she won more than $110,000 on scholarships.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who will pass through the admission process. I just finished the admission process and, guess what? I got into MIT! Thanks a lot to College Matters because this book really helped me a lot during the process!!!!
