Student-oriented and amazingly thorough

I don't have the time to go into every reason I really appreciate this SAT prep book. Its many chapters are filled with one-page lessons, then review questions, then practice problems. It is well-written and the lessons are clear, simple, yet accomplish a lot of tips and techniques. There is also a section of vocabulary grouped by theme and by roots, and practice tests. Those tests are not close enough to the real thing to use on their own. I just use them if I'm tutoring for months and months and need more practice questions because I've run out of College Board practice tests. Speaking of the tests, not only are answers included, but explanations with references to the chapter lessons that match them.
I'm an SAT tutor myself and I've it (coupled with the College Board book) as part of my mandatory study materials.

Definitely $$$'s worth

I bought a set of ACT books & a separate set of SAT books for Christmas 18 months prior to my daughter needing to take these tests. Just for kicks I paid for a pre-test in both categories to see where she stood. She went from a 1420 to a 1660, but honestly only used the books for 6 months & not the 18 she had. I am not going to tell you that every single point she gained was from this book, but I will tell you that this book definitely helped her study, focus & understand that these tests are very serious. I have bought 3 more sets for our 3 other kids to start prepping all because we know that the higher these scores, the more opportunities they have to apply to top schools & gain scholarships. The topics, information, tips, practice tests & all other components of this book have made a difference & I believe increased her score several points (the rest was school & other at home activities we were doing). For the parents or grandparents looking for something kids can put in their backpacks & pull out while waiting at practices, before school, at lunch, while grounded or just before bed - this is an idea that shouldn't be overlooked.

My daughter's choice

I brought home from the library a couple dozen 2009 SAT preparation books for my daughter to choose from as she gets ready to take the SAT in Oct. She just finished Math B and wants to take the Math part of the SAT ASAP while the material is fresh in her head.

Her first reaction to this book was, "Ewwwwww! McGraw Hill writes my textbooks! I definately don't want that one!"...but after she reviewed a couple chapters in the other books, she chose this one to buy.

The difference that I noticed is that this one offers a couple pages of material to read, then a page of questions about the concepts presented, and then a page of problems to solve using those concepts. The next couple pages explain the correct answers.

Sometimes my daughter had trouble with understanding the correct answer to a question. All but one time when she asked for my help, it was because of a typo. Interestingly, the 2010 and 2009 editions had the same typos. I saw no differences between the two editions except the covers, though I did not fully compare them. I have read at several websites that recent editions of SAT preparation books are practically the same as current editions. I insisted on her using the most recent edition because I wanted to be sure she didn't miss an important change. I haven't noticed any changes at all.

My daughter took the math sections of a practice SAT before she started using this book. She is spending a week on each chapter. She took a practice SAT after using 2 of the 6 math chapters. Her score went up 100 points!

About the Author
Alvin S. Goodman, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York. He is a Certified Professional Hydrologist with extensive academic and professional experience in water resources and hydraulic engineering in the United States and throughout the world. His research experience includes project analysis, water resources planning, water quality management, hydrology, environmental systems analysis, energy related problems, and education. Dr. Goodman has authored or co-authored 75 books, technical articles, and research reports, including more than 40 referred publications.

Makarand Hastak, Ph.D., C.C.E., is an associate professor in the School of Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, and management at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Dr. Hastak is a Certified Civil Engineer with extensive experience in conducting research, teaching, and assisting the construction industry in the areas of project management, project controls, management decision-making, risk analysis, and infrastructure management. He is a member of the Construction Research Council of the American Society of Civil Engineers and serves on the Education Board of the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering.

The psychological and philosophical reasons for needing to own a boat made from honest trees instead of the material that L. Francis Herreshoff characterized as "frozen snot" needn't concern us. But in this day and age, hard-nosed economics and the ubiquitous bottom line certainly should.

FACT: You can buy a repairable wooden boat and renovate and remodel it for a lot less money than you can buy and renovate a plastic or metal of similar size and condition. Note carefully the absence of the word "restore" from the preceding assertion. If you want to "restore" a valuable antique boat to museum standards, you're holding the wrong book, and you should replace it carefully, face-out, on the bookshelf and look elsewhere.

But if you want to be out on the water in a biodegradable boat of character and style, a boat you've salvaged from biodegradation by the sweat of your brow and the barking of your knuckles, and you hope to do this on the pitiful remainder of the paycheck Your Government has graciously allowed you to retain, then clutch this book to your bosom and walk, nay run, to the checkout counter.

Jim Trefethen has renovated dozens of good old wooden boats, and in this book he's sharing his collected wisdom, craftsmanship, and penury with you. This isn't a generic step-by-step renovation manual. All wooden boats are different--even wooden boats that left the same boatshop on the same day. The ravages of time and the elements and uncaring ownership conspire against each wooden boat from launch day on, but each is affected differently.

This book will supply you with the basic skills you'll need to successfully renovate an old wooden boat--any old wooden boat, from a 16-foot canoe to a 50-foot cruiser, and everything in between--provided the boat actually is repairable (and you'll learn how to determine that, too). You are expected to know a bit about boats and how to work with tools, but you needn't be a master craftsman or Joe or Josephine Truesalt. After you've read Wooden Boat Renovation, we hope you come away knowing what is possible and how to accomplish it. Then we hope you actually do it.

If You Want A Wooden Boat, Buy This Book!

When I bought this book, I had some basic wood-working skills (I've built decks and simple things like that), but I knew absolutely nothing about making repairs to wooden boats. This book gave me valuable guidance in selecting a classic old wooden boat to buy, and helped me to transform her into something marvelous over the course of this summer.
The book is well-written. It is not highly technical or difficult to understand and it gave me confidence to take on some repairs that I would never have attempted if I hadn't read it. The author is clearly a character, and his personality shows in the amusing asides and comments sprinkled throughout the book.
A well-made, classic wooden boat is really a piece of art that just happens to float. There are few straight lines, pieces are bent in multiple directions and stressed in unusual ways. The book won't turn you into a Picasso of this amazing art overnight, but it is tremendously helpful to somebody just getting started.
If you are thinking about jumping into wooden boats, consider the following: With a little bit of money and lots of hard work, I now own something which speaks to my soul. How many of your current possessions can you say that about?

Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas

This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. The book is full of fun wooden boat philosophy, interesting personal anecdotes, and great stories. On the practical side, the author provides a good introduction to wooden boat types and construction, excellent information about selecting, evaluating and purchasing a boat for rennovation; planning and initiating projects; necessary tools and supplies; repairing holes in a wooden hull; and even some tips about building in cabinets and furniture.

The approach is admittedly "quick and dirty," that is, it presents practical, time-saving, and relatively inexpensive ways to get your wooden boat on the water, as opposed to nit-picky and involved pristine restoration techniques. The book isn't for the purist but for the pragmatist, and in that regard the advice and techniques offered are spot-on.

Unfortunately, however, the book is lacking in a few critical areas. Firstly, the section on hull refinishing is insubstantial and confusing. His step-by-step example is weak here as well: he uses a hatch cover, really not the same as facing the challenges of refinishing an entire hull. All this is surprising, since the rest of the book is so comprehensive. (Indeed, ten highly detalied pages are devoted to wooden deck repair.) Also, the use of epoxies and their derivatives gets short shrift, and these days this is a critical area. It's as if here the author is an advocate but not an expert; recommendations about the use of epoxies in hull refinishing are dated and unreliable, and there is no mention of their potential, with fillers, for use in cabin or deck repair. For a book that prides itself on quick and easy alternatives this is an unfortunate omission.

Of course, for any ambitious wooden boat project you'll gather a collection of books, and be sure to add this one, since there is a wealth of good stuff here. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But do look for additional sources if your main interest is hull refinishing or if you anticipate any epoxy work.

Great Read and Superb Information

This is a "must-have" book for both the serious as well wanna-be wooden boat owner. The book is loaded with lots of helpful information and tips. And it is fun, easy and enjoyable to read. Jim's no nonsense writing style is clear and consise. The book does not cover topics in intricate detail but that is not its intent. What it does cover is 80% of what someone needs to know and the book is a great resourece for further research. You just get a sense that Jim knows what he's talking about. Buy this book!

Good Confidence Builder With Value Plus

If you don't want to overwhelm your SAT candidate with GIANT books filled with scary tests, use this book as a stepping stone. It's small enough to fit into a back pocket, has an encouraging tone and will help with motivation. It is not enough for the SAT's by itself, but it is a good baby step to build confidence to move into the bigger books. Most students can handle 3 minutes and once they are successful--are willing to move into more substantial study time. Overall, good warmup book to prepare students to learn.

Don't bother

As a tutor I bought this book thinking I could use it for some of my students. The book is too short and what there is consists of vague generalizations, and cutesy comments. Some of the quotes are funny, but there is too little of substance to justify buying this over the many other SAT books available.

Dissappointed

Throughly pleased with Randall McCutcheon's other 3 Minutes A Day book for the SAT essay, I purchased this book with high hopes. While this book was far more interesting than other books, the lack of examples and obvious tips made this book not very helpful. Then again, one does have to realize that it is difficult to be both concise and comprehensive. For a quick review of the verbal section, this book is great. However, if you need intensive help with reading, I would suggest a different book (or just more practice). The practice passages in the end particularly irked me. The passages were informative and interesting, with one or two follow-up questions. These passages, however, are not reflective of the real SAT, which usually has obscure or boring passages. This book is a fun read, but lacking in true practice material.

Introductory with very little useful information for the average mariner interested in Amateur Radio aboard your boat.

Marine Amateur Radio purports to be a text on selection, installation, licensing, and use; but fails to provide more than cursory, introductory information on selection and the most important installation and antenna selection phase. The very brief section on antennas for HF (high frequency) communications could have filled 25 pages leaving the mariner with lots of choices and alternatives, but in fact was introduced and finished 4 pages later. Buy this book if you know absolutely nothing about Amateur Radio and want lots of history, licensing, and non-marine related amateur radio activities, but do not buy it for strategies and tactics to select equipment and build or buy antennas for your vessel. Buy it if you are interested in knowing about amateur radio (ham radio) and some of its uses.

Another book that is simply not worth the purchase price. There is no new information here, just a brief glance through general information about ham radio. Very little information about radio on boats and no specific information about selecting, installing, and operating a ham radio on a boat. I hoped that this would be a good book.

James L. Bildner is a sailor, helicopter pilot, explorer, and summer resident of North Haven, Maine. Together with his wife, Nancy, Jim has sailed the coast of Maine for more than a quarter century, most recently aboard Windward, a Hinckley 52-foot sloop.

It's gorgeous and very useful

I recall chartering in the British Virgin Islands over 20 years ago and being handed a spiral-bound book that showed all the anchorages viewed from a couple hundred feet above the water, looking in. Wouldn't it be great if there were something like that for the far-trickier Maine coast? Well, now there is, and it's extremely well done.

Most two-page spreads in the book comprise an excellent harbor photo, the related section from the current NOAA chart, and a description of the harbor area. Superimposed on the chart is an arrow indicating the location from and direction in which the photo was shot. Some charts also include additional arrows that are overlayed on the photo as well so that you can see, for example, how the safest route for entry as seen on the chart actually looks on the water. That is really nice.

By my rough count, there are 110 harbors covered, from Isles of Shoals (OK, they're not quite in Maine) to Buck's Harbor on the west shore of Machias Bay. Unfortunately, anchorages around Eastport have been omitted. Maybe Mr. Bildner can get to them in a future edition.

Everyone cruising the Maine coast will want to have this supurb visual guide aboard to supplement the three standard guides. I only hope that the availability of this fine work won't bring TOO many folks and boats "from away" up to crowd our beautiful coast.

Maine Visual Cruising Guide: a MUST for all Maine cruisers

This outstanding book provides substantial assistance for trip planning and cruising the coast of Maine.
Having cruised Maine's beautiful coast for several decades, planning for my next cruise this summer has already been made easier by having this fine book. Of course, one must do the usual "paper chart navigation" planning before hand, but the additional help of this book is invaluable.
This book has a permanent place both shoreside and onboard while cruising.
It also makes a fabulous gift for my like-minded cruising friends.

Another disappointment

I have been trying to improve my career through remembering most of the math concepts like geometry, trigonometry, calculus. To do this I have been pursuiting the reviews of books from amazon.com to get the books for.

Another day I have bought this book without reading any comments about it because the other algebra book was fine and from the same publisher I loved. But I am disappointed.

The book starts from the basics and trying to transfer the ideas to you in a as roughly way as possible. Defines sin, cos stuff but never *fully* explains what they really are. And top of them continues to put more un-fully-defined bricks to show how your stability goes far.

I am not recommending it to anyone who tries to learn (or remember) the concepts and have a feeling about them.

If You Want to Learn Trigonometry, Find a Different Book!!!

First off, I'm not afraid of math--I had a 100% in my college algebra class last semester, and I bought this book to get a quick overview of trigonometry to give myself an edge before taking a formal class. I bought this book because I had been very satisfied with Algebra: Demystified, and had assumed that all books in the Demystified series would be of a comparably high quality, but I was sadly mistaken. This book is terrible--it will not teach you trigonometry. Mr. Gibilisco wastes lots of space giving you no brainer advice like a whole paragraph on why you should use your calculator if needed or reviewing simple things like the Order of Operations. On the other hand, he gives a formula for circular motion in the first chapter and doesn't even bother to explain the variables or provide an example of it. The second chapter, appropriately titled, "A Flurry of Facts" is an endless series of formulas, most of which don't come with examples. Furthermore, the book doesn't have sufficient exercises. There are only 10 multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter, and they don't have solutions, not to mention that examples of similar problems within the chapter were strangely absent. Although I was able to score 100% on both of the first 2 chapter tests, I gave up in the middle of the third chapter because I realized that if I really wanted to learn trigonometry, I should go elsewhere. Once I have found a better text, I'll edit this review to refer you to it.

Too much missing

Like another reveiwer, I also was very pleased with the Algebra Demystified book. As a long-time math disaster, I was able to test out of remedial Math and start College Algebra with a good foundation as a direct result of Albegra Demystified. After taking College Algebra, I returned to the Demystified Series to ramp me up on Trigonometry. I found that the author simply fails to explain his steps adequately. He makes too many assumptions about knowledge the student will possess. In fact, fresh out of College Algebra with a respectable high B, I was non-plussed after the earliest pages of Trigonometry Demystified, and actually found myself referring to my Algebra/Trigonometry textbook from college to clarify topics.
